I’m not a photograpy lover as real art, but I make an exception for a man
of extraordinary talent. And a man who devoted his entire life to documenting
the native peoples of North America. Not just visually, but historically.
Edward Curtis is among the most accomplished historians on earth that no one has heard of. A relentless genius who sacrified so much of his life to record the
American Indian history before it was lost forever. I have infinite respect for this man’s art.
The photograph that started it all.
Chief Seattle’s aged daughter Angeline.
She was living in complete squalor and Curtis realized that a
direct descendant of a major chief, whose city was named after him, the history was ending. His photograpghy sudio sold many copies of this. I jump started his career. And led to the most important history of the American indian ever. Partially funded by the POS JP Morgan, who shit on Edwards every chance he could.
He died in poverty and obsurity in Los Angeles in 1952. And his genius only recognized years later.
His comprehensive history of the North American indians is invaluable. A white man is responsible for keeping an enormous amount of history alive about a vast disparate people with no written language.
Look him up.

I just saw this same photo on Antiques Roadshow a little while back It’s huge and stunning and IIRC it was valued much higher than I guessed it might be. The expert spoke of him in reverential tone, and of this photo in particular.
He made 20 folios of the entire history complete with photos. They are housed in various mauseums and I know Yale College has one.
The Smithsonian too. They are probably priceless. Morgan has one but do not know where it is housed.
