I include the 14th Amendment as the cornerstone of the death knell, being the first of four Amendments that failed ratification and were enacted anyway. IMO, it started with Hamilton and his ilk overthrowing the Articles of Confederation and was advanced in a bigger leap with the formation of the republican party and their first president, Lincoln. The republican party was the first radical socialist party to gain power in the US, and they held that power exclusively for about 40 years or so.
