SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
Anthony Aaron, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Jean Sibelius: Lemminkäinen Suite, Four Legends from the Kalevala | Turku Philharmonic Orchestra

Leif Segerstam, conductor

I. Lemminkäinen and the Maidens of the Island
II. Lemminkäinen in Tuonela
III. The Swan of Tuonela
IV. Lemminkäinen’s Return

The Lemminkäinen Suite, or more correctly Four Legends from the Kalevala, Op. 22, is a sequence of four tone poems for orchestra completed in 1896 by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The work was conceived as Veneen luominen (The Building of the Boat), an opera with a mythological setting, before taking its form as a suite. There is a narrative thread: the exploits are followed of the heroic character Lemminkäinen from the Kalevala, which is a collection of folkloric, mythic, epic poetry. The second tone poem, The Swan of Tuonela, is popular as a standalone orchestral work.

Grieg – Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 Op. 46, Maciej Tomasiewicz & Polish Youth Symphony Orchestra

The Sunday temple to worship music is marvelous for stimulating the curious to explore a bit, and one can usually find additional pieces worthy of worship like this one.

This Next Piece Comes To Us Thanks To difrangia.

Loreena McKennitt : Raglan road

Superb selections this fine Sunday for my personal tastes; Loreena sunk the hook in me in the early 2000’s with ‘Night Ride Across the Caucasus’ on the ‘Mystic Radio’ site which no longer exists in the form that it did in that time frame. Studied her a bit and saw nothing but top listener ratings so went out and acquired ‘Book Of Secrets’ and the capture was complete. During the two weeks in 2006 wife & I did a drive-around tour of the south half of Ireland, Loreena performed the three night concert series in Spain that resulted in the ‘Nights From The Alhambra’ CD and concert-video that the Caranversari selection above is from. If you like this vid, I strongly suggest experiencing the audio and in particular the video of the NFTH compilation. You will see and hear instruments assembled together with accomplished musicians that you’ll most likely see nowhere else. In 2007 we were privilaged to experience Loreena and her troupe at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville TN. After the intermission, The first performed piece was ‘Raglan Road’ an epic Irish poem set to music that has been recorded by numerous renowned artists such as Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, and others. The concert was spellbinding from lights-up to lights-down, but after Raglan Road, it took two weeks to get my feet back fully on the Earth. Caroline Lavelle and that cello are almost too exotic/erotic for public display.

The Following Is Brought To Us Thanks To Klingon.

Respighi: Ancient Airs and Dances

This performance by Antal Doraty and the Philharmonia Hungarica on the Mercury Living Presence label is one of the finest performances of this work.

Ancient Airs and Dances (Italian: Antiche arie e danze) is a set of three orchestral suites by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, freely transcribed from original pieces for lute. In addition to being a renowned composer and conductor, Respighi was also a notable musicologist. His interest in Italian music of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries led him to compose works inspired by the music of these periods.

Suite No. 1 P 109 was composed in 1917. It was based on Renaissance lute pieces by Simone Molinaro, Vincenzo Galilei (father of Galileo Galilei) and additional anonymous composers.

Suite No. 2, P 138 was composed in 1923. It was based on pieces for lute, archlute, and viol by Fabritio Caroso, Jean-Baptiste Besard, Bernardo Gianoncelli, and an anonymous composer. It also includes an aria attributed to Marin Mersenne.

Suite No. 3, P 172 was composed in 1931. It differs from the previous two suites in that it is arranged for strings only and somewhat melancholy in overall mood. (A note by the composer in the printed score states that the work may also be performed by a string quartet, completely omitting the double-bass part.) It is based on lute songs by Besard, a piece for Baroque guitar by Ludovico Roncalli, and lute pieces by Santino Garsi da Parma and additional anonymous composers.

Beethoven – Symphony No. 5

0:00 I. Allegro con brio
07:47 II. Andante con moto
18:22 III. Scherzo: Allegro
23:59 IV. Allegro

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is an ingenious construction on the most famous four notes in Western music history: the short-short-short-long motif with which the Fifth Symphony begins. Beethoven would have said about it: “fate is knocking at the door”. Beethoven’s contemporary E.T.A. Hoffmann wrote an influential review of the Fifth Symphony. According to him, the music sets in motion “a mechanism of awe, fear, horror and pain. It is imbued with longing, which is the essence of romance”. “The Fifth” naturally became immensely popular.

Mari Samuelsen – Max Richter: November

Last Sunday I introduced you to the amazing Ms. Samuelsen playing Arvo Pärt’s – Fratres … time for another performance by this amazing violinist …

Mari Samuelsen is one of today’s most imaginative and eloquent violinists, known for her inventive approach to programming and presentation. As part of Deutsche Grammophon’s 120th anniversary celebrations held at Beijing’s Forbidden City, Samuelsen took the solo lead in Max Richter’s “November”, accompanied by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Long Yu.

“My Heart will go on” reminded me of the performance by Celine Dion.
It is no wonder that the Vegas casino guy built her a huge $100 Million dollar stadium for her exclusive performances. Here she performs it and the video puts together her costume changes for the performances.

Gonna be a great day predicated by the selections here. That last ‘Godfather’ performance is the icing-on-the-cake for me. BTW, contrary to popular belief, Fredo didn’t die in the row-boat; that’s darn sure him on the clarinet !!

We just recently watched the Paramount+ ten episode docu-series ‘The Offer’ and if you’re a ‘Godfather’ nut, do check it out; it sheds a new perspective on the making of the initial epic of the movie series.

The Ennio Morricone spaghetti-western themes were little rocket-boosters for me for later in the day. Here’s an interesting little performance to round those classic pieces out. The Ukulele; ‘The Mouse that Roared’ !!

I’ll be moving mountains and slaying dragons today.
