I could see raising cows/goats/chickens for milk/cheese/eggs ect.,I could not unless they were very ill kill them,thus,would make a lousy farmer in which slaughter tis part of the life.

Exactly. People are now sheltered from the gruesome part of eating animals due to grocery stores. In the past, children saw the slaughter and it was a common site. Not just on farms but in the cities. For example, the cows or sheep were walked to the cities, like London, and the slaughter was done there, near where the meat was sold, so even city kids saw it.
Uh folks,have hunted and butchered bugs and bambi,that said,developing a long term relationship with animals could then not kill.
Oh,have also caught/dressed out fillete fish for meals,no worries,will be fine when it all ends till all the animals hunted out and fish fished out.
Actually,having read the book Alive when I was 8 also opens another world of options.
I have seen both children and adults from rural life get sentimental over particular animals, even though they are quite used to slaughtering and butchering, and hunting.
It would be unnatural to not be affected by an animal’s death. But people have to eat and it doesn’t mean you can’t kill animals to eat. Today, that activity is hidden. But it’s something you may have to get accustomed to in the future.
The problem comes in when people treat their meat animals as pets.
But also remember, there are people that have killed and eaten dogs they love when lost in the woods just so they could eat. When you’re starving, you’re more capable of sustaining yourself than you know. Even in ways that would disgust you today.
One of the saddest stories from the Holomodor in Ukraine was from a woman talking about searching for quail eggs and eating little birds from the nest. Starving children will eat anything.
