A Bigger Picture

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

The Covid-19 virus itself didn’t run the United States into a ditch but it exposed the weakness and rot in the nation’s drive-train, and now all of us passengers on that disabled bus must decide whether to stay helplessly inside the smoldering wreckage arguing over who’s to blame, or begin a long, uncertain march down the road on our own two feet to a place of new arrangements.

In 1918, the country was lashed by a far deadlier pandemic disease at the same time it was fighting a world war, and daily life barely missed a step. The economy then was emphatically one of production, not the mere consumption of things made elsewhere in the world (exchanged for US IOUs), nor of tanning parlors, nail salons, streaming services, and Pilates studios.

The economy was a mix of large, medium, and small enterprises, not just floundering giants, especially in the retail commerce of goods. We lived distributed in towns, cities not-yet-overgrown, and a distinctly rural landscape devoted to rural activities — not the vast demolition derby of entropic suburbia that has no future as a human habitat. Banking was only five percent of the economy, not the bloated matrix of rackets now swollen to more than forty percent of so-called GDP. Government at the federal and state levels was miniscule compared to the suffocating, parasitic leviathan it is now.

What happened? Like Hemingway’s old quip about a man going broke slowly and then all-at-once, we allowed everything in American life to creep into hapless giantism too cumbersome to adapt to new conditions, and suddenly conditions have changed.

And now it’s all coming apart: the dying chain stores, the giant zombie companies that can only exist by borrowing money to buy back their own stocks, the auto-makers who have run out of lending schemes for non-creditworthy customers, the shale oil fracking companies that could never make a red cent, the agri-biz farmers grown morbidly obese on a diet of credit and government subsidies (just like their end-customers grew obese on engineered snack-foods), the Wall Street lords of financialization hypothecating fortunes by leveraging the stripped assets of everything not nailed down from sea to shining sea, the swelling underclass conditioned to helplessness, addiction, and vice, the inescapable ambient tyranny of media hype, propaganda, and disinformation, and, of course, the catastrophe that government has become.

Get this: none of these things now wobbling and staggering will be resurrected. They’re all going extinct, like the Baluchitherium of the Oligocene. To keep propping them up — as the Federal Reserve sedulously props up financial markets — will only promote the illusion that we don’t have to move on and conduct daily human life differently. A worldwide contraction was already underway before Covid-19 stepped onstage. The contraction was sending a very loud and clear message: giantism went as far as it could go and now it’s up to the smaller and nimbler to carry on. Beware the promises of the sclerotic authorities asking you to remain in thrall to them — and dependent on them.

Expect these authorities to screw up even the next big exercise in their own franchise: the 2020 election. It will be the climax to a season of political hysteria and will complete the chapter of our history that left us on that smoldering big bus in the ditch. The scramble away from that disaster scene will be frightful and desperate. No matter who ends up in control of the government — or pretends to be — the same forces of contraction and decomplexifying will actually rule and you will have to act accordingly.

Many people will seek to escape the places they live now to find new homes and livelihoods elsewhere. These demographic movements are already underway. New York City is hemorrhaging much of its tax base as the wealthy flee, Chicago too, and the whole state of California. These places will be overwhelmed by functional bankruptcy, even if legal legerdemain allows them to avoid declaring it. Other states, counties and municipalities — including many suburban blobs — will also founder, meaning all the usual support systems and safety nets vanish. Many supply chains will break. Money may either be scarce or worthless, which are two ways of going broke.

Right now, start planning where you might go and what you can do. The turmoil will be filled with opportunity to find ways to be useful to other people, to devise work-arounds for ruptured systems and relationships, in getting food to people, making things they need, distributing them, fixing things that are broken where possible, and moving people and stuff from point A to Pont B. There will be plenty of work for people who are willing to do it. Keep in mind that it’s entirely up to you to make good choices.

Don’t despair, and if you find yourself veering toward it, get over yourself. It’s just part of becoming stronger than you thought you could be and the times will require it of you anyway. The offices that gave out brownie points for avouched victimhood will also be shutting down. Won’t that be a relief? Welcome to the joyful illumination that life is difficult for everybody. Who is ready for this epic journey?

And right after the entire economy goes extinct, some of us will evolve into chickens.

I read that somewhere.

I’ve grown to really enjoy Kunstler’s columns. I think his heart is in the right place, and respect that it’s humbling to do a 180 on your political allegiance and call a spade a spade (he’s now writing for The American Conservative, of all places). That being said, the big fact that he’s careful to avoid, day after day, is that what’s happening to our country is not a result of gross negligence by our leaders. It’s a planned demolition. “Order out of chaos.” If one believes this is the case, you must then ask WHY are they doing this to us? Every crime has a motive.

Christ, I’m ready. For too long we have lived a life far above our input or output and watched the whack jobs amongst us get away with all kinds of counter productive neurosis and psychosis.
The little darling won’t have as much time to secure BLM from the ominous clutches of that boogeyman systemic racism. Once the inner city dwellers have burned everything to the ground in their temper tantrums they will see, like the spoiled pampered children they are, nobody is coming to save them and nobody gives a crap about their wayward ideas, ideals and plight. Won’t that be grand to see! Sink or swim bitches!
Watching the leftist and Antifa scum actually working to survive and no longer in the sheltered clutches of their Marxist professors and parental geld, they can learn the physical labor required by socialism that has thus far evaded their tender tendrils. A calloused hand they’ve never known before! That too will be grand! Karen will be too concerned with scrounging for some dandelions to eat. No time to call authorities over some trivial insult to her self righteous sociopathy she observed across the street. Tv’s Housewives of wherever, trying to sell their rotten crotches and baubles for a moldy bagel. Awesome! So many other sights I’ve failed to mention, equally as poignant that will fill me with glee.
Less time fuckin around in the blather and more time spent in search of the next meal. Oh yeah, I can’t wait. The new scorecard: ants 10 grasshoppers 0

If anyone truly thinks they are going to “enjoy this epic journey” they are completely clueless and have absolutely no idea what is really coming no matter how prepared they think they are.

“and now all of us passengers on that disabled bus must decide whether to stay helplessly inside the smoldering wreckage arguing over who’s to blame”

This is the problem. If we identified who’s to blame at the get-go, we wouldn’t be in the position we are in now. Unfortunately, we were unable to place responsibility mostly where it should have been…with ourselves. Most got fat on deceit, not hungry enough for truth and satisfied with being fed with bullshit.

Next, it is not the Tyrants to be feared, but the ENFORCERS of Tyranny we have to reckon with. They will ultimately be the ones to take blame.. And the ENFORCERS come in all stripes. From the government and municipal armed law enforcement and Antifa Militias, to the Carens and Cevins everywhere, to friends and family members who still don’t get it.

Plant seeds. Literally and Figuratively. Cultivate what can and does grow. Wherever you are.

Always entertaining, and usually wrong.
“People” aren’t leaving the cities – the rich are. Because what’s the point of living in poop and homeless filled streets when you can’t even go to the theaters, fancy restaurants, clubs, gyms and stores?
And they’ll be back once those return.
As for the economic prescription: not entirely wrong, but absolutely not right.
The US dollar and US economy hasn’t gone the way of Zimbabwe because the US economy is much, much bigger than Zimbabwe’s. A $4.5T Fed balance sheet seems like a lot until you consider that the US dollar is used in roughly 60% of the $100T annual world trade economy. And most of that isn’t involving Americans on either side (US is about 12% of world trade). Even the US deficit of $26T – which is 30% owed to foreigners, isn’t so bad relatively speaking. Even discounting that the other countries (EU in particular) are almost all worse and without the “free dollars” from world trade.
This “back to the earth” nonsense would be a lot more believable if the medium were not the internet: none of which could exist in a true subsistence economy.

Check out “Things To Come” by HG Wells. The movie is available from several sources as well as the novel itself. It shares many things with the idea of Fourth Turnings. The movie has the same actors playing one generation after another, doing the same stupid things over and over through history. The corrupt leader always rouses the masses to gain power for the sake of power. Really nothing new under the sun. This too shall pass but I have to be realistic and believe it will come to pass as Von Bismarck said “through blood and iron.”

Check out “When The Sleeper Wakes” by H. G. Wells in 1899

Free download but try to find a copy as quite a difficult read, but when you are done it will be hard to decide on a better written book ever. In fact ten million negroes typing for a thousand years would be hard put to even conceive of the idea of this book.

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/775/775-h/775-h.htm

Its got everything: bankers, revolution, cities under domes, flying machines before there were such a thing along with anti-aircraft cannons, evil negro stormtroopers, the world on fire.

“Welcome to the joyful illumination that life is difficult for everybody.” deep philosophy, this will hurt those who believed they were owed something by society the most.
For me i would brush off any thought of State aid if i could still work and fend for myself since leaving the nest, how can an able bodied wish to be a burden upon the rest.

Buy as much food, gear, tools and good boots as you can because life is going to get really simple soon. You will have to submit to the Borg via a vaccination/ implant of some device to buy, sell or work at a sanctioned work place.

If you still live in a city get out! Ditch the retirement plan or whatever else keeps you tethered right now because you are never going to get all or any of it anyway.

We did this after 9-11 and lived in a 16×35 military wall tent for three years while we became debt-free and built our own dream house; it was one of our finest decisions we ever made. People called us crazy and many other names, now they don’t think we were so crazy.

That is a wonderful story/post!

Along with wise advice, I own 12 pairs of various boots, with five still in the box. Have backed up pairs for my wife, daughter, and son-in- law.

I love brass balls to the walls people.

Up vote to the 10th power…

I ‘m 70 and my bride is 65, we have owned 5 houses in four states, and are half way through building our dream home…built the farm first and lived in a super low cost doublewide for the last 8 years.

My woman designed the first floor and I designed the four part basement (with a hidden root cellar, and hidden safe/gun room, and many other ‘unusual’ defensive features.

She is so excited she is biting me (again).

Life is juicy sweet…piss on these doomed Luciferians…COME AND TAKE IT you lost demonic bastards and bitches!

And somehow the wheels just came off of the bus and we randomly landed in the ditch. That’s a fair hypothesis of events leading up to this miserable conclusion, but it isn’t necessarily an accurate assessment of what has transpired over the last century.
This is more in line with what was planned and then implemented by those who hate you and want you gone from this planet:
1. The creation of racism offenses.

2. Continual change to create confusion

3. The teaching of sex and homosexuality to children

4. The undermining of schools’ and teachers’ authority

5. Huge immigration to destroy identity.

6. The promotion of excessive drinking

7. Emptying of churches

8. An unreliable legal system with bias against victims of crime

9. Creating dependency on the state or state benefits

10. Control and dumbing down of media

11. Encouraging the breakdown of the family

One of the main ideas of the ??______?? was to exploit Freud’s idea of ‘pansexualism’ – the search for pleasure, the exploitation of the differences between the sexes, the overthrowing of traditional relationships between men and women. To further their aims they would:

• attack the authority of the father, deny the specific roles of father and mother, and wrest away from families their rights as primary educators of their children.

• abolish differences in the education of boys and girls

• abolish all forms of male dominance – hence the presence of women in the armed forces

• declare women to be an ‘oppressed class’ and men as ‘oppressors’
All of what has happened was preplanned and even put down in writing in the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. Now, let’s talk about how they’re forgeries, etc., blah blah blah.
Go ahead and order you own copy, but prepare to read it and weep. Poor downtrodden Jews, let’s let them in and settle here, what harm could it do? You tell me.

My own forays into Wrongthink have made me the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I’m “writing about the Jews again.” Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in. There, some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly “inclusive” one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are. There are terms for all of this: unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge. I’m no legal expert. But I know that this is wrong.

I think it will be very painful in many ways. Food will be the primary mover just as it always is, no food equals death. Many will die trying to get food. Revelation will be fulfilled whether we like it or not.
