Know Your Enemy – Green Day

Do you know the enemy? Is it Iraqis, Iran, the Taliban, terrorists, Muslims, Russia, North Korea, China, or our government? General Douglas MacArthur had a distinct point of view on the more likely threat.

“I am concerned for the security of our great Nation; not so much because of any threat from without, but because of the insidious forces working from within."

William Strauss and Neil Howe wrote the book The Fourth Turning in 1997. Their theory is that history is a series of repetitive 100 year cycles with four generations living through each cycle. Each cycle and generation has many similarities, only the particular events change. We are currently in the most hazardous part of the cycle with the most volatile generation in positions of power. Strauss & Howe foresaw perilous times ahead:

“Based on historical patterns, America will hit a once-in-a-century national crisis within the decade...'like winter,' the crisis or 'fourth turning' cannot be averted. It will last 20 years or so and bring hardship and upheavals similar to previous fourth turnings, such as the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Great Depression and World War II. The fourth turning is a perilous time because the result could be a new 'golden age' for America or the beginning of the end. It all will begin with a 'sudden spark' that catalyzes a crisis mood around the year 2005.”

We are currently in the midst of the Fourth Turning, an era of upheaval, a crisis in which our country will redefine its very nature and purpose. The sudden spark that catalyzed this crisis occurred on the beautiful sunny morning of September 11, 2001. The crisis reached an initial crescendo in late 2008. Many believe that the worst is behind us and the future has begun to brighten. This is highly unlikely. Previous crisis periods lasted fifteen to twenty years. The Civil War crisis was confined to five brutal years that resulted in 600,000 American deaths. The crisis in our past history that appears most analogous is the Great Depression/World War II crisis that lasted sixteen years. A financial depression caused by the Federal Reserve pumping too much credit into the financial system during the 1920’s had been considered the worst in U.S. history. The current financial crisis, caused by the Federal Reserve pumping too much credit into the financial system along with politicians turbo charging the effort by eliminating all regulation of the financial system, has led to the Greater Depression. We are likely only half way through this crisis, with tears and bloodshed yet to follow.

Are You a Terrorist?

Most people in America, comfortable in their manicured lawn suburban sprawl will discount the possibility of civil unrest, war, and dictatorship in this country. Could Nazi like sociopaths gain control of our government? It is inconceivable. Anyone who would bring up this possibility would be branded a lunatic. As Doug Casey recently pointed out in his article Street Fighting Man, the Germans thought the same thing.

Who would have guessed that the Germans of the last century, who had much more than their share of writers, composers, philosophers, scientists, plain middle-class shopkeepers, and a well-educated, orderly population would have bred the Nazis? It would be easy to recount dozens of recent examples of perfectly ordinary countries that have gone bonkers. The fact is that your neighbor or your mailman, who pets his dog, hugs his kids, and plays softball on the weekends, might exhibit a much less appealing, indeed an appalling, side when social conditions change. The problem arises when a society becomes highly politicized. In normal times, a sociopath stays under the radar. Perhaps he’ll commit a common crime when he thinks he can get away with it, but social mores keep him reined in.

However, once the government changes its emphasis from protecting citizens from force to initiating it with laws and taxes, those social mores break down. Peer pressure and moral opprobrium, the forces that keep a healthy society orderly and together, are replaced by regulation enforced by cops funded by taxes. And sociopaths start coming out of the woodwork and are drawn to the State, where they can get licensed and paid to do what they’ve always wanted to do. It’s very simple, really. There are two ways people can relate to each other: voluntarily or coercively. The government is pure coercion, and sociopaths are drawn to its power and force.

With the never ending lessening of our civil liberties after 9/11, the government power over our daily lives grows day by day. Recent revelations that the Department of Homeland Security considers Ron Paul and his followers, potential terrorists are disturbing. A February 20 report states:

"Due to the current economical and political situation, a lush environment for militia activity has been created. Unemployment rates are high, as well as costs of living expenses. Militia members most commonly associate with 3rd party political groups. It is not uncommon for militia members to display Constitutional Party, Campaign for Liberty or Libertarian material."

A new Department of Homeland Security report highlights security risks posed by extremist groups and disgruntled veterans. The report stated that threats could come from “military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities.” I’m sure the young men and women who risked their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan for George Bush are thrilled to find out that the organization he created to protect the homeland considers them a terrorist threat. The U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA recently put out a report titled Known Unknowns: Unconventional Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development warning an economic crisis in the United States could lead to massive civil unrest that would require the military to restore order. The report states:

"Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities to defend basic domestic order and human security, in case of unforeseen economic collapse.”

Why are the government organizations that are supposed to protect and defend our citizens making plans to protect the government from the citizens? President Obama’s top advisor David Axelrod had this to say about the tax day tea parties last week.

“I think any time you have severe economic conditions there is always an element of disaffection that can mutate into something that’s unhealthy.”

Since when did peaceful protest and free speech become unhealthy? What is unhealthy and dangerous is when the government and many in the mainstream media proclaim that what these people were doing was perilous to our country. Maybe Mr. Axelrod, Nancy Pelosi and the pundits on MSNBC should read the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.

Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Strauss and Howe described the similarities of most crisis phases:

A crisis arises in response to sudden threats that previously would have been ignored or deferred, but which are now perceived as dire. Great worldly perils boil off the clutter and complexity of life, leaving behind one simple imperative: The society must prevail. This requires a solid public consensus, aggressive institutions, and personal sacrifice. People support new efforts to wield public authority, whose perceived successes soon justify more of the same. Government governs, community obstacles are removed, and laws and customs that resisted change for decades are swiftly shunted aside. A grim preoccupation with civic peril causes spiritual curiosity to decline. Public order tightens, private risk-taking abates, and crime and substance abuse decline. Families strengthen, gender distinctions widen, and child-rearing reaches a smothering degree of protection and structure. The young focus their energy on worldly achievements, leaving values in the hands of the old. Wars are fought with fury and for maximum result.

On September 11, 2001 an attack by 19 Muslim terrorists using knives to hijack airliners and fly them into the Twin Towers and Pentagon plunged the United States into a state of crisis. This was an attack by a small terrorist organization of less than 10,000 members led by Osama bin Laden. It was not an attack by the Muslim world against the Christian world. The dogmatic, single minded, religiously driven George Bush, influenced by neo-con extremists, decided a worldwide war on terror was the solution. He even declared the war on terror as World War III. Using fear tactics and bullying weak Congressmen who feared losing their jobs if they showed courage, George Bush enhanced the power of the government over our lives by ramming through the USA Patriot Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001) and creating the Department of Homeland Security in the name of safeguarding the public from unknown phantom dangers. Section 2 of the act essentially allows the government to listen in on your private conversations or access your emails. Does this seem proportionate to the acts of 19 men with knives that could have been foiled by a $39.99 deadbolt lock from Wal-Mart?

The fact that there have been no terrorist attacks in the U.S. since 9/11 is touted as being due to this act and the Department of Homeland Security. Therefore, sacrificing civil liberties is seen as a small price to pay for safety and security. Osama bin Laden’s 1st attempt at blowing up the World Trade Center occurred in 1993. He patiently waited eight years before his 2nd attempt. Has spending over $1 trillion since 9/11, forfeiting 4,900 American lives and sacrificing of individual liberties led to our increased security, or are the terrorists just being patient?

The perceived success of these extreme measures has now convinced a majority of the population that government can solve all of their financial troubles better than the free market. America is a minimum monthly payment nation. As long as they can make the minimum monthly payment, they can lease a BMW, buy the best furniture today and worry about the bill in 2013, and buy electronic gadgets and bling on their Capital One credit card. The American sheeple are being led to slaughter by shepherds (Obama, Geithner, Bernanke) who have convinced them that borrowing and spending at malls will save the country. The Baby Boomers are desperately hoping to be saved from their own irresponsible behavior by even more reckless behavior by their government. Boomers will never be celebrated for their willingness to sacrifice and accept the bitter medicine that is required to rebalance their lives. Ask them to buy a Rolex with someone else’s tax dollars and they are all in. I’m personally hoping the crack in my windshield will eventually convert into the likeness of Jesus Christ. I’ll turn my car into a shrine and make millions. Just classify me as a Boomer optimist.

The risk taking by entrepreneurs that has been the basis for our economic success is abating as they step aside and let government dictate how auto companies, insurance companies, and banks should be run. Government is dictating the winners and losers. They will pick the winners that will benefit government and their social agenda. Government will use this crisis to enhance their power. The 50% of Americans who pay no Federal income taxes will support any idea or program that will get them something for nothing. Politicians will frame every issue as an either or option. You either support their new spending plan or catastrophe awaits. The young allow their dogmatic parents to dictate family values. The rhetoric in our society continues to get more polarizing.

American Idiot - Green Day

Strauss & Howe described the Prophet/Idealist generation as being born during a High, spending its rising adult years during an Awakening, spending midlife during an Unraveling, and spending old age in a Crisis. Prophetic leaders have been cerebral and principled, summoners of human sacrifice, wagers of righteous wars. Early in life, few saw combat in uniform. Late in life, most prophets come to be revered as much for their words as for their deeds. The three previous crisis periods in U.S. history were dominated by the prophetic leadership of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt. George Bush has led us through the 1st half of this crisis. It is likely that Barack Obama will lead us through the 2nd half of the crisis. I don’t think George Bush will be revered for being cerebral or making inspiring speeches. He did wage a righteous war against terrorism. Barack Obama is cerebral and principled. He is waging a righteous war in Afghanistan, though he has never seen combat. He is already known for his inspiring speeches. Will he rise to the level of Lincoln?

George Bush and Barack Obama are both Baby Boomers. The oldest boomer is 63, the youngest 45. Boomers occupy the leadership positions in government, corporations, military, and educational institutions. Boomer leaders are cocky, aggressive, and quoting Doug Casey, “quite willing to burn down the barn in order to destroy whatever rats they see.” George Bush was sure there was WMD in Iraq. He was sure that cutting taxes, sending out rebate checks, and letting banks regulate themselves was the path to prosperity. Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke were sure that TARP would save our financial system from collapse. Barack Obama was sure that if we didn’t pass his bloated stimulus bill, catastrophe awaited the country. Baby Boom leaders are always sure and often wrong. The masses are drawn to leaders who are sure of themselves. They want to believe that a wise man will lead them to the Promised Land. They won’t realize that he is leading them to hell, until it is too late.

Strauss & Howe explained their view of how America was feeling in 1997. They were dead on. We are a country that has been rotting from within for decades.

America feels like it’s unraveling. Though we live in an era of relative peace and comfort, we have settled into a mood of pessimism about the long-term future, fearful that our superpower nation is somehow rotting from within. The America of today feels worse, in its fundamentals, than the one many of us remember from youth, a society presided over by those of supposedly lesser consciousness. We yearn for civic character but satisfy ourselves with symbolic gestures and celebrity circuses. We perceive no greatness in our leaders, a new meanness in ourselves. Each new election brings a new jolt, its aftermath a new disappointment.

Many Americans know we are on the wrong track but are so distracted by the circus like distractions of every day life, they choose not to think about it. It is likely that the 123 million eligible voters who chose not to vote in the 2008 Presidential election don’t even realize the country is on the wrong track. The sedated masses were easy to manipulate when unemployment was 4%. There are now 6 million more people unemployed today than just 16 months ago in November 2007. Another 2 to 3 million will lose their jobs in 2009. The government doesn’t count another 5 to 10 million people who are classified as out of the workforce, but would like to work. This means there will be 20 to 25 million people out of work by the end of this year. Unemployed people have a propensity to be angry. In the last few months there have been several mass murders committed by angry unemployed men. As the economic “solutions” rolled out by politicians and Federal Reserve bureaucrats lead to an inflationary depression similar to the Weimer Republic of the early 1930’s, civil unrest will rear its ugly head.

Doug Casey describes the likely scenario:

People believe they have little to lose, they’re eager to hang those they believe responsible for their problems, and they’ll listen to radical or violent proposals. We’re now just entering what will likely be the worst economic trough since the Industrial Revolution. A rioter is typically an angry person looking for vengeance because he blames someone else for his problem. So far, rioters seem to be directing their attention at governments. Correct target, of course, but they don’t have the rationale quite right. They’re not angry because governments inflated the currency, promoted fractional reserve banking, and nurtured all the cockamamie socialist programs that caused this crisis. Not at all; they rather liked all that. They’re angry only because their governments haven’t adequately protected them from the consequences of what they did. So as conditions worsen, we can expect governments worldwide to pull out absolutely all the stops to show they’re “doing something.” And round up scapegoats to satisfy the mob and divert anger from themselves. I fully expect civil unrest to spread everywhere, simply because the depression will spread everywhere. It will be worst in places that have been most overextended, most debt leveraged, most urban, and have the largest numbers of unemployed workers -- the U.S., Europe, and China.

The civil unrest is most likely to erupt among Hispanics and African Americans. The unemployment rate of Hispanics is 11.4% versus 5.0% in November 2007. It is doubtless far worse, as many Hispanics worked “under the table” in the housing industry. The unemployment rate of African Americans is 13.3%, the highest since 1993, and up from an all-time low of 7.0% in 2000. The urban areas of the United States are a powder keg, with automatic weapons available to anyone. Policemen are being slaughtered at a record pace. Mexico is on the verge of becoming a failed state. Drug lords are running the country. Its oil fields are in rapid decline and it will no longer be an exporter of oil within 5 years. The Mexican government depends on oil for 40% of its tax revenues. The collapse of Mexico’s government, extreme power of murderous drug lords, and worldwide depression will drive millions of poor towards the U.S. border. The anti-immigrant feelings in the U.S. continue to grow as more white Americans lose their jobs. This is an explosive combination that will eventually require military and National Guard intervention.

There are two other hot button issues which will increase the anxiety in this country. Guns and ammo are selling like hotcakes. The combination of apprehension that Obama and his Democratic majority will put restrictions on gun ownership and the severe economic downturn has led to an exorbitant increase in gun sales. Ruger has a $48 million backlog of guns on order. Many citizens in the Western states live by the motto: You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers. Any effort by the Obama administration to restrict gun ownership will be met with major resistance. The Tax Day Tea Parties revealed the other hot button issue for many Americans. When the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010 and Obama institutes his Cap & Trade energy tax, the economy will receive a double whammy. At that point the failed economic policies and higher taxes will lead to consternation and resentment throughout the land. The unending economic turmoil throughout the world will result in protests and anger in many countries. The more disturbing issue is how politicians will try to divert the attention of the masses through the use of an external threat.

Back in 2006 John Mauldin wrote an article titled Fingers of Instability. It was based on a book written by Mark Buchanan called Ubiquity, Why Catastrophes Happen. It examines chaos theory, complexity theory, and critical states. Physicists, using a computer model examined what takes place when sand is continuously piled up grain by grain. They were endeavoring to understand what makes the pile ultimately collapse. Buchanan described the experiment:

"Imagine peering down on the pile from above, and coloring it in according to its steepness. Where it is relatively flat and stable, color it green; where steep and, in avalanche terms, 'ready to go,' color it red. What do you see? They found that at the outset the pile looked mostly green, but that, as the pile grew, the green became infiltrated with ever more red. With more grains, the scattering of red danger spots grew until a dense skeleton of instability ran through the pile. Here then was a clue to its peculiar behavior: a grain falling on a red spot can, by domino-like action, cause sliding at other nearby red spots. If the red network was sparse, and all trouble spots were well isolated one from the other, then a single grain could have only limited repercussions. But when the red spots come to riddle the pile, the consequences of the next grain become fiendishly unpredictable. It might trigger only a few tumblings, or it might instead set off a cataclysmic chain reaction involving millions. The sand pile seemed to have configured itself into a hypersensitive and peculiarly unstable condition in which the next falling grain could trigger a response of any size whatsoever."

"In this simplified setting of the sand pile, the power law also points to something else: the surprising conclusion that even the greatest of events have no special or exceptional causes. After all, every avalanche large or small starts out the same way, when a single grain falls and makes the pile just slightly too steep at one point. What makes one avalanche much larger than another has nothing to do with its original cause, and nothing to do with some special situation in the pile just before it starts. Rather, it has to do with the perpetually unstable organization of the critical state, which makes it always possible for the next grain to trigger an avalanche of any size."

You may be wondering what sand has to do with war. The relevance is that a small seemingly minor incident could lead to a large world war. At the moment Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Serb anarchists in 1914, no one expected a World War to result. When the war began most expected it to last a few weeks. Instead, over 15 million people died in one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. There are many known flashpoints that could lead to a broader worldwide conflict. The use of nuclear weapons seems unlikely, but the deaths of 15 million people in World War I and 70 million in World War II also seemed unlikely at the outset of each conflict. Among the possible flashpoints are:

Israel attacks Iran nuclear facilities.
Pakistan government collapses and conflict with India and/or Afghanistan erupts.
Russia attempts to reacquire its former territory the Ukraine.
China attempts to reign in its former province Taiwan.
North Korea attacks South Korea.
While the U.S. gets bogged down in Afghanistan, civil war breaks out again in Iraq supported by Iran and Syria.

Difficult economic periods often lead to war. The economic period ahead will be intensely difficult. Leaders of the U.S., China, and Russia will see their economic theories and solutions discredited. The natives will become restless as they are kicked out into the streets, homeless and hungry. The U.S. has completely ignored the energy crisis that is bearing down on them. The 12% of our daily oil supply from Mexico will be gone in less than five years. Our economy is still in freefall. If oil were to rocket back up into the mid-$100’s in the next year, the consequences would be dire. A conflict between Israel and Iran would immediately lead to a spike in oil prices. If Iran is attacked they would surely launch missiles at the Iraqi oil fields and attempt to block or mine the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States views China and Russia as our chief adversaries in the world. The United States is attempting to get Georgia and the Ukraine admitted into NATO. If Russia were to attack either country, the U.S. would be obligated to go to war against Russia. How would we do this with an all volunteer military that is already stretched too thin? Russia knows we are stretched thin and will push right to the edge of conflict. China knows they can not win a traditional war with the United States. Therefore, they are not preparing for a traditional war. As the U.S. spends $765 billion per year on F-22s, aircraft carriers, and tanks, the Chinese use our dollars to buy up commodities and natural resources in Africa, South America, Australia, and the Middle East. The next war will be a resource war and a cyber war. China is already winning the resource war. Russia has vast reserves of oil and natural gas. Worldwide turmoil is beneficial to the price of their major assets. The United States is dependent on foreign nations to the tune of 5.1 billion barrels of oil per year. Who will be more desperate when the oil tap is shut off?

As the U.S. is bogged down in Iraq, Afghanistan and our Mexican border, further world conflict would stretch U.S. military capacity to the breaking point. As the U.S. economy falls further and the price of oil skyrockets, American leaders will grow increasingly desperate. They will be looking for an opportunity to flex their muscles and prove to the American people that they aren’t really failures. This will be the dangerous time where the fingers of instability could be triggered by one grain of sand. Suppose China decided to take advantage of our weakness and attacked Taiwan. We would steam our aircraft carrier fleets towards the conflict. Suppose China launched a nuclear missile 100 miles from our fleet at sea as a warning. Would we launch a nuclear missile at China? If cyber war broke out and the Chinese or Russians were able to disable our electric grid and or satellites, we would be unable to detect a nuclear strike. Would we launch our nuclear missiles in response? Who knows? If Russia and China can disable our satellites, we can surely do the same. Uncertainty, pressure and panic never lead to a positive result. Could the end of earth as we know it be over in a matter of moments due to the miscalculations of inept politicians? You know the enemy.

The current crisis does not have to end this way. If the American people can wake up from their materialistic stupor in time, this crisis could lead to a new beginning for the Great American Republic. This crisis will inflict enormous pain on many Americans. If we continue on the current path, violence is in our future. If we permit the country to re-balance to a sustainable level of spending, address our future liabilities, and develop an energy plan, there is hope. The choice is ours.

Your first big lie; Osma Bin Laden ring leader for "19" terrorists. Sorry NO government agency has presented ANY proof

that Osma Bin Laden had ANYTHING to do with 9-11. There has been NO proof presented by our government that

that "19" high jackers did anything. In fact there is no evidence that any persons not on the passenger lists got on any of the

flights. Hell I could go on for hours on the lack of proof. 9-11 was a coup against the citizens of America and the entire world perpetrated by a small group of traitors inside our government in conjuction with radical zionist elements inside Israel.

Proof of my accusations, well actually there is a large volume of real evidence in plain sight available to anyyone who has an interenet connection. Just connect the dots.

You are right Daniel, but more importantly I want to know who taught people to think this way. Whabbi Islam but whom is puppeting Islamic states or whom provides material support for these states. What are these puppeteer states really attempting to do? My opinion is that there is a prize, the international monetary peg prize. Our enemies have chipped away at America. Certainly some should now be called American traitors. The global economic battle now being waged seems to be over this prize with all global citizens considered peons and fodder for either the East or West engaged in this battle which will certainly become physical. In any event, Central Banking is a model that will phase itself out for something better over time. Those holding power will allow the house to be burned down as long as there basement playroom remains intact. That is very dangerous.

It's high time we stopped identifying ourselves with labels or political parties and had it out globally via debate online. The viewpoints of East and West are going to be much different then ours at times here in the United States. Debates should always be based with some facts but in this early stage of global discussions, emotions based upon engrained beliefs will flare up at first more then the facts. Our objective is not to have some private club. It is to provide technology that unites the global citizens that all are treated like serfs. We as American Patiots will show the world we know how to clean up our own government. That will speak volumes to nations and peoples who view all Americans as zionists, capital pigs, rude, imperialistic etc. That is not our population. I simply ask militant Islam what is better? Me willing to die for your family and friends to save your physical life as Christ commands me to do or is it better to go out and murder my family because Allah commands them to do? Surely a god of all creation would not need man's tiny power of bullets, knives and even the atom to kill adversaries. Last, how many Martian rovers does Islam have? They are still claiming the right to a chunk of land a couple hundred miles across as a focus while the rest of the world has started exploring dimensions.

Give time for debate and different perspectives, even if they are radical. They may just teach us who our friends and adversaries really are. However, I doubt I will speak too much common sense to a person convinced he must saw the heads off of civilians.

With the nature of this government and the power mongers behind the scenes, I would put nothing past them. Even the Oaklohoma Federal Building bombing was strange, with demolition charges on the pillars holding up the building. The BATF got text messages not to come in to work....but the children were not notified. TM was just a stooge, a useful idiot, truly motivated according to the deed, however useful to others in ways not known to him. I think the same with the 911 event. It was very useful. Each of these events were used to a end...power grab. Now the financial crisis is being used for another power grab. The opportunity for recovery may be past, but the door is still open a crack! Let's pry it back open and take on the powers that be, first by means of the political process. If it is responsive, great. If not, "to tyrants never bend the knee!".

All of these so called crises were planned and carried out by our government and then blamed on assorted "terrorists" so the American people would be afraid and think that they "really need" our government to protect them. So much so that they will give up all of our liberties so they will be "protected".

Your "terrorists" are in the United States Government. Osama bin Laden had nothing to do with 9/11. Timothy McVeigh had nothing to do with the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing. Lee Harvey Oswald did not kill President Kennedy. Our government did all of this when someone tried to stand in the way and defend our freedoms. Martin Luther King was a victim of the CIA. Abraham Lincoln was NOT the victim of some crazy theater-going person. They were all victims of our government.

Our government is now steering us toward fascism. Obama is a fraud. Both political parties are frauds. They are all in on the plan. Americans had better wake up before they are victims of the American Holocaust. The prison camps are ready and waiting. Do some research on FEMA building the prison camps that will soon house all of us "terrorists" who dare to object to what the government is doing.

And by the way, the CDC has millions of plastic coffins stocked up in Atlanta, Georgia. Looks like they are planning on alot of us dying soon. Amazing how the H1N1 flu just suddenly came about. This fall it will be pure bird flu. It will kill millions. I wouldn't get one of the CDC's flu vaccines if I were you. It is in the vaccines.

Bird flu has already been weaponized - they are just deciding when to pull the trigger. It will be dropped from planes as an aerosol. Remember the part in Revelations about "the birds will fall from the sky"? Just drop dead. Amazing coincidence isn't it?

Hello Jim,

Great article, but it 'appears' that you need to do some more research on the 911 building demolitions. As a suggestion, you could start with Building 7 and work from there. I would recommend you drop any reference to it from your future articles even if you understand what really occurred and are trying not to disturb the brainwashed masses with one more extremely troubling detail about the powers that be. Perpetuating the government myth about what happened on 911 doesn't help the masses to wake up, but instead keeps people in ignorance and prevents them from coming to terms with the real issues they need to deal with. I read Strauss and Howe's book when it came out several years ago. It's a safe (no danger of being labeled terrorists) 30,000 foot academic prognostication. It's possible that the real issues are too disturbing to face even for you, and that's why you appear to have chosen a fairly safe academic stance with your writings. After all you wouldn't want to be lumped in with terrorists like Ron Paul or go through what Ward Churchill went through would you? Do you know your enemy?

I just read your post to Jimbo and you definitely hit the nail on the head. I've met many people with belief systems similar to his. They aren't able to move out of their comfort zone enough to look at the 'inconceivable'. I actually responded to his reply to my post, but my reply never got posted. Must be some editorial filtering going on. He's clearly a victim of the dis-information strategy that's ubiquitous now or he's collecting names for somebody else. Either way, he's made it clear that he's not interested in expanding beyond his comfort zone and that he also believes he's getting truthfull info from his government. This inability to expand his belief system and dig deeper also affects his analysis of the current economic events. I guess I'll be moving on to communicate with someone with a more open mind. I do find it inconcievable that our own government would murder 3,000 Americans in cold blood. I did watch the show on Discovery that I thought gave fair time to the conspiracy theories and the mainstream view. The planes did fly into the twin towers. They have Atta on film at the airport. There were phone calls from people on the planes that terrorists had taken over the planes. The jet fuel melted the structure and the buildings pancaked. In order for it to be done with explosives would have taken weeks of visible work to plant the charges. People in the buildings would have noticed. I've never seen a shred of proof that it was done by our government.

Watch dozens of youtube videos, look into the phony investigation done by Kissenger, question whether NIST did a fair investigation, and so forth. Calls from people on planes? Are you SURE? I appreciate your article. As usual I don't agree with it all but I do with most. Certainly the slant of it is on target.

As to the folks above (comments) who speak of the 911 event being an insider conspiracy that seems preposterous given the plethora of interrelated data spread over several states, days, and institutions.

But I never say never. I am convinced that much of congress is corrupted by $$$, and of course the "banksters" system is quite corrupt, so I will remain open to almost any possibility these days!

We have been killing each other since the beginning of time, us humans that is. And for what? Two reasons, my man/ women, money and religion. Does anyone out there know where the word "human" came from? I think it was made up from someone who wanted a better word than animal. That is all we act like, have acted like since the beginning of time, is an animal. That is why most of us animals like socialism. Think about it, if your feed a wild animal enough, he/she will start to like it and soon you will have a domestic or socialized animal. Then all of sudden if the two of you fear you will not be able to fill your gas tanks because you are running out of oil, the next thing you know, both of you will be heading to Iraq to make sure you can fill your gas tank in the future. If the next inflation gets out of hand and turns hyper, there will be more of us acting like animals instead of humans.

Actually, mankind will have this utopia when we have mastered genetic engineering and can successfully weed out passive-aggressive traits we as a species no longer need. Same with chemical imbalances that often create sociopaths. Mankind after cheating physical death will then move on to freeing ourselves from the constraints of time and gravity, becoming energy. This is also the testimony of the bible and God's plan as well. According to the bible mankind made the decision to do it his own way instead of God's which was easier. So we got it our way alright. We also get to do the heavy lifting to fix our genetics.

One criticism of an otherwise thoughtful and provocative article. You say: "The urban areas of the United States are a powder keg, with automatic weapons available to anyone." That is the liberal media disinformation talking as, in fact, true automatic weapons are stringently controlled, require a difficult to obtain and expensive class 3 Federal Firearms License to sell and a written application and fee to buy. I hold a class 1 FFL and may not deal in automatic weapons and do not want to but understand that it is semi-automatic weapons that are commonly available. The difference is when you squeeze the trigger on a full automatic it continues to fire until every round in the magazine is gone or until the trigger is released; when you squeeze the trigger on a semi-auto it fires one round. That is a BIG difference. Despite having dealt with thousands of firearms over the years I have literally never seen a full auto except on a screen.

On August 21, 2008, the National Institute of Standards and Technology released a 77 page report on the cause of the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7. It concluded that the collapse occurred because the building was set on fire by falling debris from the other burning towers, that catastrophic failure occurred when the 13th floor collapsed weakening a critical steel support column and that the collapse of the nearby towers broke the city water main, leaving the sprinkler system in the bottom half of the building without water. The theories that the collapse was caused by explosions or fires caused by diesel fuel in the building was investigated and ruled out.

Well, Jim, some "red flags" should have gone up when you noticed that the public was waning in its support of the conflict in the Middle East and then "coincidentally" the twin towers (as well as WTC 7) went down, as a result of a "terrorist attack." (And from there, the shredding of our Bill of Rights quickly began.)

Are you unaware that the Bush Administration was completely corrupt?

The "business" of war, and its resultant "business" of reconstruction, are a huge profit machine. The concept of "terror" as an impetus to patriotism is almost yawningly trite.

Good article. 25% of all U.S. citizens believed by 2005 that the U.S. government purposely created this slaughter. I don't believe that at all. However, the reason citizens feel this is possible is because we no longer have a representative government.

The belief in one-world government has been loudly proclaimed by Bush I, Clinton, Bush 2 and now Obama. Americans have seen there quality of life go down the toilet ever since and it seems that the stated objectives of these Presidents on the 'wonders' of globalization amounted to nothing more then an opportunity for a global kleptocracy via a monetary lending model that has chained every citizen on earth to it.

America sold our sovereignty to the highest bidder. I have seen Clinton pushing the button on cruise missles that hit government buildings in China when they proliferated missle tech Clinton allowed to be sold to them. I saw Bush 2 respond with overwhelming force to the Taliban, only to pick the exact wrong battle to fight next in Iraq and massive chronie capitalism on defense and oil infrastructure contracts. Bush I bullt a mighty coalition of the willing and then renigged on promises to American citizens on taxes.

Obama made myriads of promises to cut wasteful spending and correct the banking interests only to continue allowing the looting of the Treasury and billions of pork-barrel spending.

LISTEN. America is under the full effects of state capture by global private banking interests. In businesses I have owned, I had investors. The investors always had a very powerful influence over the operation for if they yanked funding, the business would be impaired and it would be more difficult and take longer to succeed. It is always easier on myself with some investors, allowing me to have more time for my family and personal interests. However, there is a big difference between 'influence' and 'control'. The more in a business I wished to just manage money that the investors provided, the less I personally would do, the less I would be engaged with my employees doing the heavy lifting.

The global banking interests now control America and are driving it into the ground to fund what they consider the next great nation, China. Regaining operational 'control' of America is just like in a business and requires breaking contracts, heated conversations, pissed off investors and other such unpleasantness. But if the investors are driving my business into the ground, then adios and I will do what is hard, work the 16 hour days, reward the laborers for production, innovation and research. Then I will repair the relationships with the investors after I have proven the correct model and renumerate these investors for there capital. The same must occur in America. The investors should know we will correct the model and then renumerate them. But it is wrong for forced renumeration from the laborers in advance. That leaves nothing for the business to grow and to demonstrate the model and leaves the investors with only there first few stipends from the investment. Bear in mind nations are also competitors. Who told the world the Chinese are no longer Communists? They are, they are simply migrating slowly into more capitalistic structures. But as investors there is little or no guarantee they won't destroy the entire American model now that the cream of that model has been obtained. I have nothing against the Chinese people. I have nothing against American people, or Russian. What I am against is the monetary lending model that preys on frail human weakness surrounding impulse control. This model is 400 years old.

Where are the Patriots?

Those of us who have long been paying attention to the dismantling of the “American Dream” have been lone voices screaming bloody murder. More and more people are now clued in because recent financial events have exposed the beast for all to see. Nothing like a hit to the pocketbook to get an American’s attention. Will we reach a critical mass? Will anything really change?

I have been completely mystified for years on this subject. How can this great country be intentionally destroyed with nothing more than a whimper from the masses? There have to be thinking people in positions of high authority that actually meant it when they swore to defend and uphold the US Constitution. Is there such a thing as permanent leave? Have even those that serve in the intelligence agencies gone over to the dark side?

Apparently, donning white hats went out of style with films of the old west.

It would take a much more extensive essay to describe a true American patriot. I’ll be very brief here for the purposes of this article. The sacrifices our Founding Fathers made in the name of freedom were exemplary to put it mildly. A patriot would demand national sovereignty, honest money, fair markets, no encroachment on individual properties or liberties as well as a representative government. That’s for starters.

The following historical events provided multiple occasions for real patriots to step forward:

Official accounts of 9/11/01 reek to the heavens. Can you trust a rogue government (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkl3pUmkzdU)? Only the “conspiracy theorists” smelled foul play.

The events leading to the invasion of Iraq in order to dismantle their supposed weapons of mass destruction was contrived to say the least. Where were the patriots?

The Geneva Conventions against torture and war crimes have been ignored most of this decade. Where were the humanitarian patriots?

The Patriot Act and Homeland Security measures have stripped the Constitution and our Bill of Rights. Where were the freedom lovers?

Americans and other global citizens have long been spied on by their own governments (http://www.tysknews.com/Depts/Big_Brother/echelon_spy_in_the_sky.htm). Hear no evil … see no evil.

The elitist banks of Wall Street have long been the epicenter of fraudulent and criminal activities that have now sent the world into a synchronized recession/depression. There were lots of cheerleaders on the way up but the patriots were M.I.A.

What we call “money” is nothing more than a system of profiteering for those who administer it and reside closest to its spigot. Silence is golden though the money is not.

Gold has been officially suppressed for decades and only the gold bugs squawked (http://www.gata.org).

The US is bankrupt by any measure other than what officials bring our way. There is coming a default heard round the world. Few are aware or prepared. What, me Worry?

Congress and the Executive Branch have completely ignored the overwhelming will of the people and taken care of their own … the banking elite. True patriotic activity is just now showing up. Restless native Syndrome is incubating.

A new administration takes office and Republicans and Democrats are so busy demonizing each other they fail to realize the same crooks remain in control behind the curtain. Patriots don’t belong to secret societies favoring one world government.

Martial law is part of ongoing authoritarian game planning (http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/09/24/army/). Our military cannot be constitutionally used on the state and local level. Will the men and women who signed up to defend the American people assist in enslaving us? Military patriots have shown up here in the form of Oath Keepers (http://oath-keepers.blogspot.com/2009/03/oath-keepers-declaration-of-orders-we.html)! Will this movement find our military loaded with true patriots? You’d better hope so. Please forward this key literature to those you know serving in our various military branches.

The Missouri Information Analysis Center distributed a secret report to law enforcement officers that those that defended the Constitution, were anti-abortion, opposed the New World Order or voted for mentioned third party candidates (etc) were to be treated as “domestic terrorists (http://www.newswithviews.com/baldwin/baldwin501.htm). Due to an outcry from concerned citizens and organizations this totalitarian measure has been forced back into the darkness from which it came.

Tax protests and “tea parties” are taking place around the country with one specific goal of bringing transparency to the Federal reserve via Ron Paul’s H.R. 1207 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-1207). Concerned citizens are now in the streets.

States are demanding their Constitutionally guaranteed sovereignty per the Tenth Amendment (http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2009/02/09/state-sovereignty-movement-quietly-growing/). Another wake up call.

What’s all this mean? There is a clear and growing movement to reign in a rogue government and their ruinous cronies. The backlash against government fraud, waste and abuse is palpable. It is not just the internet that is now alive with educated and outraged American patriots.

To that I say … welcome aboard. We have a lot of catching up to do.

Great ending to the article, it's a shame most of the commenters above didn't read it. I for one have invested in oil, fired my TARP sucking bank, and cut spending anticipating the trouble to come. Timmy from Treasury was on your favorite network this morning (CNBC) saying he would not accept the return of TARP funds from any banks until he and his cohorts were sure that the entire banking system was working to his satisfaction. Since when did "private" companies have responsibility to their competitors?

Mr. Quinn writes in a clear, lucid style and he constructs his arguments cogently and persuasively. He builds to his conclusions with judicious layering of appropos quotes and facts and figures. The foundation and scaffolding is strong. And he has a literary flare, "a way with words," and a keen appreciation for others' apt expressions.

My biggest problem lies in some of his cast-off remarks, tossed arpeggios. Calling Obama's programs "cockamamie" socialism, misconstrues Obama's role as savior of the elite's banking, financial, media, academic and defense empire--and misconstrues "socialism," as well. Gerald Celente is more accurate here: the union of government and financial/corporate power is fascism (as defined even by Mussolini!), not socialism. Socialism moves in the direction of egalitarianism, not towards greater state control.

Mr. Quinn's presentation of "chaos theory"--using the model of the avalanche of sand particles--was skillful and helpful to our understanding of just how critical global instability is now; and how it will likely worsen in the sad years to come.

While I usually agree with Jim Quinn's excellent articles, I have to disagree on the last lines: The Chinese have no interest in an armed conflict, they wouldn't be the aggressors (but would somehow be presented as such...).

What's happening with Taiwan is nothing more than a big saber-rattling show to tell the Chinese people that China's mainland hasn't given up on Taiwan. Taiwan is almost totally dependent on China and since last year there is commercial air traffic between both countries again.

The real danger is the probable collapse of Pakistan (a nuclear power) with American troops on its western borders and a traditional enemy, India, on its eastern borders. And last but not least American troop presence in Afghanistan is too close to Russia.

It saddens me that so many miss the point. Though I may disagree with Mr. Jim Quinn's views on 9-11 (I assure you that I do), that wasn't the point of this piece at all. He showed that it was a catalyst, a grain of sand that started the earth moving, an event that changed our future. This was not a forum for debating who sent the 19 men out, but about the result of the changes in America, after the event unfolded.

It is a challenge to get a shovel and personally help dig down the pile of sand, before it is to late. If you focus on the structure the sand is on, the shovel we have to share, then you've missed the open ended hourglass pouring more sand on the pile.

On a side note: Jim, Jason, or others who run the website, please put a note on the leave a comment section that you have to be a registered user AND signed in, in order to leave a comment. It isn't obvious.

Hi Mr. Jenkinson. The person who had the problem commenting was simple user error. She emailed me. Is this what you were referring to? Any person can do fly by blogging without a registered account. However, a user cannot reply or mail other registered users without an account.

I am very grateful for people such as yourself that point out the need for better instructions or functionality, the site should have a short video like Google does or "How to Use This Site" link on the primary navigation. We are working on all of it. We are very short staffed and both Jim and I work full time. I own two companies. A collaborative think tank I began in August of 2008 are helping us. The contributions in various forms are accelerating now as we did what we said we would do (all entrepenuars should know this critical point). In less then two weeks, the Internet will see a business plan opportunity about 'citizen powered media'. I have been fortunate to have some very senior guidance assist us when I asked way back when. Patriots of both the investor and entrepenuar class are stepping up for the nation of all sorts of political party affiliations.

I can understand the site attracts folks from multiple party affiliations, it has started with a noble cause. Regardless of one's opinion, people recognize genuine alacrity. How did the 9/11 stuff is unknown. But those planes did not bring them down. Did you listen to the firefighters say that there are secondary explosion? Do you know how many other building in the world burn and then collapse? None. WTC 7 just collapsed. It is all about money and power, this stock crash only proves that point further. Why not look at Newton? A building can only fall at the speed of gravity if there is no support under it. What happened to the floor before? Did they get tired of acting like steel? Newton says it matters not how much weight an object has during freefall.

The NIST report notwithstanding, the science of the collapse of the WTC is solidly in favor of a demolition. If you can buy the official explanation over the physics involved, then there's not much that I can tell you that will change your mind. In my view, the basic facts of the failure of the 3 towers are not consistent with the explanations given, nor is the hole in the Pentagon large enough to force a jetliner through. Although, I will admit that some of the required preparations are also improbable (particularly for me, the "planted" cell calls), I find it much less credible that physics would be abandoned on just this one day.

911truth.org makes what I believe to be a compelling case. It is far more compelling than the active suppression of evidence that is the hallmark of the government's case.

I think, ultimately, you have to ask yourself this question: Is the United States run by government officials who are deeply committed to moral principles, always defending the Constitution to the best of their ability, or is it run by corrupt officials who are beholden to an elitist, international banking cartel, which is completely amoral? If the latter, did they have the means, opportunity and motive to bring this about?

If you feel that the US is run by moral and honest officials, then you probably believe that the Fed is doing the best that it can and that circumstance is to blame for our current economic woes; that no-one predicted the imminent financial collapse (all the books to the contrary were just lucky guesses), that the international banking cartel is truly sad about the current state of affairs, and as of this moment has no plans for One World Government, New World Order or regional currencies. Then there is nothing to worry about, we'll get through this somehow.

Linking economics and 9/11 is not fair. But the problem that I am faced with is that once I have gone down the path of believing that my government is corrupt and regularly lies to me when it suits their purpose, at what point do I grant them credibility? I have become radicalized through repeated doses of official misinformation, coupled with my own ability to reason. I think the burden of proof lies with the government, not the other way around. I think there is ample evidence that elitist collectivists are in firm control. If I am shown sufficient evidence, I will happily recant. Where are the other security camera tapes from the pentagon? What could possibly require that they be classified? That at least would be a beginning.

The Fourth Turning predicts that, because of the confluence of our peculiar set of generations, our nation's ideas would become polarized and hardened. The mechanisms to instill that message out are just now being put into place with Obama's call to civilian service. The financial crisis expected "within a few years" of 2005 has materialized. Many predict that it will last 5-10 years, making this turning a virtual repeat of the last Fourth Turning. The war to come will surely resemble WWII more than anything we've seen recently.

If 911 was a false flag operation, the lesson learned must be that to capture and hold America's attention, it's got to be bigger; as Americans still approached the wars with reservations. In 1941, 3000 dead spurred Americans to total committment. In 2001, it was something less than total. If our country's leaders decide that war is the best way to exit a depression, will they be too squeamish to pull a lesson from history and embellish it? Right now, we are building up our enemies into superpower status in our propaganda. If a small nuclear device was detonated in an American harbor, how much evidence would Americans require if the government told them that it was planted in a container that originated from Iran or North Korea? Expect much worse than 911 in the next 20 years. But don't expect to be able to prove who did it.

Well, the official 9/11 story was cooked up by people who have lied about absolutely everything since they were defrauded into office - from tax cuts to weapons of mass destruction, to illegal wiretapping, to secret torture centers, to the economic situation, to bailouts, actually they are proven and accomplished and pathological serial liars who are incapable of telling any truth even by accident, as their record has shown. The official 9/11 story has changed over time, especially as the collapse of the towers is concerned, and this is as usual to be expected of lying criminals.

It was certainly a catalyst and you have to view it in the zeitgeist of the time. In the summer of 2001 major business frauds were blowing up and the stock market was collapsing and it was becoming clear that outright lies and criminality were the main foundation stones of the financial system and stock market. The president had entered office questionably as a lame duck and seemed doomed to stay as such during his pathetic term. So it was a huge political and economic crisis. All this was forgotten on Sept. 12.

Also forgotten was Rumsfeld's 9/10 2001 pronounciation that the Pentagon couldn´t account for a whopping $2.3 Trillion in defence outlays. The day after Pentagon bean counters were wiped out by something that allegedly hit the building, in any case there was a huge explosion at a section that had just been hardened and reconstructed. According to the official story an airliner hit the building feet off the ground at 530 miles per hour. That's close to cruising speed at 30 thousand feet. Pretty amazing. If you are the believe those official stories you'd have to believe that somehow reality took time out on that fateful day (along with the US military who let those box cutter boys fly around without interference) and elementary laws of physics were just suspended for the occasion.

George I'm open to your view. Please address my questions below. I'm a fact based person. Convince me through the use of facts. Sorry folks, I'm not buying it. I'm a born skeptic. I assess the facts as they are and make up my own mind. I have three main questions: Who?, How?, Why? Who benefited by destroying the Twin Towers? The market crashed, so the bankers and Wall Street lost billions. How it was done is the part that requires a huge stretch to believe. To bring down some of the largest buildings in the world through the use of demolition charges would take months of detailed work by hundreds of experts in demolition. You are telling me that there were hundreds, if not thousands of people involved in this "conspiracy", and not one has a guilty conscience and is stepping forward to say they were involved? Why would Americans murdering 3,000 other Americans be a good idea in anyone's mind? Please do not give me links to conspiracy sites. If you have facts to state, state them. The point of the article was not 9/11. The point of the article was to show that our current economic policies could lead to civil unrest and/or war. I'd rather hear viewpoints about that.

As far as collecting names, that is my technology running on this site. I am one whom can attempt to understand the inconceivable. For example, take the SAIC. It's sole function is to collect data on every individual on earth. It is a private, highly profitable company who's primary client is the United States government. You should know, the color of your toenails is known by the SAIC, US government and several hostile sovereign nations, including your financial data. While users are hesitant at registration to provide what amount to information that can be obained out of a phone book, the U.S. government is selling your health and financial information around the world to highest bidders. Go figure.

WTC 7 Collapse Claim: Seven hours after the two towers fell, the 47-story WTC 7 collapsed. According to 911review.org: "The video clearly shows that it was not a collapse subsequent to a fire, but rather a controlled demolition: amongst the Internet investigators, the jury is in on this one."

FACT: Many conspiracy theorists point to FEMA's preliminary report, which said there was relatively light damage to WTC 7 prior to its collapse. With the benefit of more time and resources, NIST researchers now support the working hypothesis that WTC 7 was far more compromised by falling debris than the FEMA report indicated. "The most important thing we found was that there was, in fact, physical damage to the south face of building 7," NIST's Sunder tells PM. "On about a third of the face to the center and to the bottom — approximately 10 stories — about 25 percent of the depth of the building was scooped out." NIST also discovered previously undocumented damage to WTC 7's upper stories and its southwest corner.

NIST investigators believe a combination of intense fire and severe structural damage contributed to the collapse, though assigning the exact proportion requires more research. But NIST's analysis suggests the fall of WTC 7 was an example of "progressive collapse," a process in which the failure of parts of a structure ultimately creates strains that cause the entire building to come down. Videos of the fall of WTC 7 show cracks, or "kinks," in the building's facade just before the two penthouses disappeared into the structure, one after the other. The entire building fell in on itself, with the slumping east side of the structure pulling down the west side in a diagonal collapse.

According to NIST, there was one primary reason for the building's failure: In an unusual design, the columns near the visible kinks were carrying exceptionally large loads, roughly 2000 sq. ft. of floor area for each floor. "What our preliminary analysis has shown is that if you take out just one column on one of the lower floors," Sunder notes, "it could cause a vertical progression of collapse so that the entire section comes down."

There are two other possible contributing factors still under investigation: First, trusses on the fifth and seventh floors were designed to transfer loads from one set of columns to another. With columns on the south face apparently damaged, high stresses would likely have been communicated to columns on the building's other faces, thereby exceeding their load-bearing capacities.

Second, a fifth-floor fire burned for up to 7 hours. "There was no firefighting in WTC 7," Sunder says. Investigators believe the fire was fed by tanks of diesel fuel that many tenants used to run emergency generators. Most tanks throughout the building were fairly small, but a generator on the fifth floor was connected to a large tank in the basement via a pressurized line. Says Sunder: "Our current working hypothesis is that this pressurized line was supplying fuel [to the fire] for a long period of time."

WTC 7 might have withstood the physical damage it received, or the fire that burned for hours, but those combined factors — along with the building's unusual construction — were enough to set off the chain-reaction collapse.

No further need to pay substantial sums of money to have demolition teams bring old buildings down with accuracy & precision. Apparently, all you need is a large tank of well placed diesel fuel. The lie is the official story........and any unbiased demolitions expert will tell you WTC 7 was a controlled demolition.

Re Building 7: Here's a FACT for you: If you look at a videotape of the collapse (easily available on the web; I can send you a link if you have trouble finding it), it is very obvious that the collapse started with the ROOF of the UNDAMAGED penthouse, proceeded down the UNDAMAGED walls of the penthouse, and then the rest of the building starts collapsing FROM THE TOP DOWN. But don't believe your lying eyes when the neo-cons have a Reichstag to burn. Seems pretty obvious which side you are on, Jim. Obviously, not the side of truth.

"Melted" Steel Claim: "We have been lied to," announces the Web site AttackOnAmerica.net. "The first lie was that the load of fuel from the aircraft was the cause of structural failure. No kerosene fire can burn hot enough to melt steel." The posting is entitled "Proof Of Controlled Demolition At The WTC."

FACT: Jet fuel burns at 800° to 1500°F, not hot enough to melt steel (2750°F). However, experts agree that for the towers to collapse, their steel frames didn't need to melt, they just had to lose some of their structural strength — and that required exposure to much less heat. "I have never seen melted steel in a building fire," says retired New York deputy fire chief Vincent Dunn, author of The Collapse Of Burning Buildings: A Guide To Fireground Safety. "But I've seen a lot of twisted, warped, bent and sagging steel. What happens is that the steel tries to expand at both ends, but when it can no longer expand, it sags and the surrounding concrete cracks."

"Steel loses about 50 percent of its strength at 1100°F," notes senior engineer Farid Alfawak-hiri of the American Institute of Steel Construction. "And at 1800° it is probably at less than 10 percent." NIST also believes that a great deal of the spray-on fireproofing insulation was likely knocked off the steel beams that were in the path of the crashing jets, leaving the metal more vulnerable to the heat.

But jet fuel wasn't the only thing burning, notes Forman Williams, a professor of engineering at the University of California, San Diego, and one of seven structural engineers and fire experts that PM consulted. He says that while the jet fuel was the catalyst for the WTC fires, the resulting inferno was intensified by the combustible material inside the buildings, including rugs, curtains, furniture and paper. NIST reports that pockets of fire hit 1832°F.

"The jet fuel was the ignition source," Williams tells PM. "It burned for maybe 10 minutes, and [the towers] were still standing in 10 minutes. It was the rest of the stuff burning afterward that was responsible for the heat transfer that eventually brought them down."

Puffs Of Dust Claim: As each tower collapsed, clearly visible puffs of dust and debris were ejected from the sides of the buildings. An advertisement in The New York Times for the book Painful Questions: An Analysis Of The September 11th Attack made this claim: "The concrete clouds shooting out of the buildings are not possible from a mere collapse. They do occur from explosions." Numerous conspiracy theorists cite Van Romero, an explosives expert and vice president of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, who was quoted on 9/11 by the Albuquerque Journal as saying "there were some explosive devices inside the buildings that caused the towers to collapse." The article continues, "Romero said the collapse of the structures resembled those of controlled implosions used to demolish old structures."

FACT: Once each tower began to collapse, the weight of all the floors above the collapsed zone bore down with pulverizing force on the highest intact floor. Unable to absorb the massive energy, that floor would fail, transmitting the forces to the floor below, allowing the collapse to progress downward through the building in a chain reaction. Engineers call the process "pancaking," and it does not require an explosion to begin, according to David Biggs, a structural engineer at Ryan-Biggs Associates and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) team that worked on the FEMA report.

Like all office buildings, the WTC towers contained a huge volume of air. As they pancaked, all that air — along with the concrete and other debris pulverized by the force of the collapse — was ejected with enormous energy. "When you have a significant portion of a floor collapsing, it's going to shoot air and concrete dust out the window," NIST lead investigator Shyam Sunder tells PM. Those clouds of dust may create the impression of a controlled demolition, Sunder adds, "but it is the floor pancaking that leads to that perception."

Demolition expert Romero regrets that his comments to the Albuquerque Journal became fodder for conspiracy theorists. "I was misquoted in saying that I thought it was explosives that brought down the building," he tells PM. "I only said that that's what it looked like."

Romero, who agrees with the scientific conclusion that fire triggered the collapses, demanded a retraction from the Journal. It was printed Sept. 22, 2001. "I felt like my scientific reputation was on the line." But emperors-clothes.com saw something else: "The paymaster of Romero's research institute is the Pentagon. Directly or indirectly, pressure was brought to bear, forcing Romero to retract his original statement." Romero responds: "Conspiracy theorists came out saying that the government got to me. That is the farthest thing from the truth. This has been an albatross around my neck for three years."

Big Plane, Small Holes Claim: Two holes were visible in the Pentagon immediately after the attack: a 75-ft.-wide entry hole in the building's exterior wall, and a 16-ft.-wide hole in Ring C, the Pentagon's middle ring. Conspiracy theorists claim both holes are far too small to have been made by a Boeing 757. "How does a plane 125 ft. wide and 155 ft. long fit into a hole which is only 16 ft. across?" asks reopen911.org, a Web site "dedicated to discovering the bottom line truth to what really occurred on September 11, 2001."

The truth is of even less importance to French author Thierry Meyssan, whose baseless assertions are fodder for even mainstream European and Middle Eastern media. In his book The Big Lie, Meyssan concludes that the Pentagon was struck by a satellite-guided missile — part of an elaborate U.S. military coup. "This attack," he writes, "could only be committed by United States military personnel against other U.S. military personnel."

FACT: When American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon's exterior wall, Ring E, it created a hole approximately 75 ft. wide, according to the ASCE Pentagon Building Performance Report. The exterior facade collapsed about 20 minutes after impact, but ASCE based its measurements of the original hole on the number of first-floor support columns that were destroyed or damaged. Computer simulations confirmed the findings.

Why wasn't the hole as wide as a 757's 124-ft.-10-in. wingspan? A crashing jet doesn't punch a cartoon-like outline of itself into a reinforced concrete building, says ASCE team member Mete Sozen, a professor of structural engineering at Purdue University. In this case, one wing hit the ground; the other was sheared off by the force of the impact with the Pentagon's load-bearing columns, explains Sozen, who specializes in the behavior of concrete buildings. What was left of the plane flowed into the structure in a state closer to a liquid than a solid mass. "If you expected the entire wing to cut into the building," Sozen tells PM, "it didn't happen."

The tidy hole in Ring C was 12 ft. wide — not 16 ft. ASCE concludes it was made by the jet's landing gear, not by the fuselage.

FACT: Blast expert Allyn E. Kilsheimer was the first structural engineer to arrive at the Pentagon after the crash and helped coordinate the emergency response. "It was absolutely a plane, and I'll tell you why," says Kilsheimer, CEO of KCE Structural Engineers PC, Washington, D.C. "I saw the marks of the plane wing on the face of the building. I picked up parts of the plane with the airline markings on them. I held in my hand the tail section of the plane, and I found the black box." Kilsheimer's eyewitness account is backed up by photos of plane wreckage inside and outside the building. Kilsheimer adds: "I held parts of uniforms from crew members in my hands, including body parts. Okay?"

No Stand-Down Order Claim: No fighter jets were scrambled from any of the 28 Air Force bases within close range of the four hijacked flights. "On 11 September Andrews had two squadrons of fighter jets with the job of protecting the skies over Washington D.C.," says the Web site emperors-clothes.com. "They failed to do their job." "There is only one explanation for this," writes Mark R. Elsis of StandDown.net. "Our Air Force was ordered to Stand Down on 9/11."

FACT: On 9/11 there were only 14 fighter jets on alert in the contiguous 48 states. No computer network or alarm automatically alerted the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) of missing planes. "They [civilian Air Traffic Control, or ATC] had to pick up the phone and literally dial us," says Maj. Douglas Martin, public affairs officer for NORAD. Boston Center, one of 22 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regional ATC facilities, called NORAD's Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) three times: at 8:37 am EST to inform NEADS that Flight 11 was hijacked; at 9:21 am to inform the agency, mistakenly, that Flight 11 was headed for Washington (the plane had hit the North Tower 35 minutes earlier); and at 9:41 am to (erroneously) identify Delta Air Lines Flight 1989 from Boston as a possible hijacking. The New York ATC called NEADS at 9:03 am to report that United Flight 175 had been hijacked — the same time the plane slammed into the South Tower. Within minutes of that first call from Boston Center, NEADS scrambled two F-15s from Otis Air Force Base in Falmouth, Mass., and three F-16s from Langley Air National Guard Base in Hampton, Va. None of the fighters got anywhere near the pirated planes.

Why couldn't ATC find the hijacked flights? When the hijackers turned off the planes' transponders, which broadcast identifying signals, ATC had to search 4500 identical radar blips crisscrossing some of the country's busiest air corridors. And NORAD's sophisticated radar? It ringed the continent, looking outward for threats, not inward. "It was like a doughnut," Martin says. "There was no coverage in the middle." Pre-9/11, flights originating in the States were not seen as threats and NORAD wasn't prepared to track them.

Please do some homework on: NORAD and the "Payne Stewart shoot down" analogy, and basic physics with respect to how certain metals react to heat, and to the law of gravity. Nothing else really matters -- a controlled demolition made possible by insiders at the highest levels.

William Lind's 300th "on war" column (printed, among other places, on www.lewrockwell.com on April 21, 2009) nailed things pretty well. The people enjoying their status among the "ruling class" in the US has no desire for change, and blocks reform of any significant nature. While I do not agree with your sources, I am very impressed with the fact that you independently researched the matter. (That sat much better with me than, "I do find it inconceivable that our own government would murder 3,000 Americans in cold blood." I happen to believe that they could . . . and have.)

However, as has been stated here earlier, I do not wish to bog down this otherwise well-written entry with lengthy arguments about the 9-11 tragedy and other findings.

It seems most unfortunate that this discussion has focused on the events of 9/11 as though there can be the slightest doubt that it was the work of terrorists, who were clearly responsible.

The mere fact that several planes were involved simultaneously speaks to the truth of a terrorist plot

No sane Government would direct a plane to damage its own Defence Headquarters

No sane Government would employ terrorists to murder its own citizens

The real issue in the article is "Bad Government" v "Good Individuals"

This is a false distinction ... The Government equals the People

So the real question is this ... are the people good ... and if so are they good enough ?

If the people allow the Government to be captured by vested interests is it the fault of those interests or the people ?

Even the talk of civil unrest establishes one point clearly ... the powerful (be they politicians, the military-industrial complex, or other high powered individuals) greatly fear the power of the people

Are the people asleep ?

If so who has the moral authority in a spiralling downturn to revive their confidence to act morally ?

Father, If you are going to start (or join) a World War, the least you have to do is kill a bunch of your own people (or let them be killed as was done at Pearl Harbor and on the Lusitania). ABC News reported on the discovery of "Operation Northwoods" perhaps uncoincidentally in May of 2001. Northwoods was allegedly a US Joint Chiefs plan to create a pretext for an invasion of Cuba - the story is easily found on the ABC News website - which called for the US military to attack US targets and blame the deeds on Cuban hijackers: sound a bit familiar? Either it's the real thing or somebody planted it: either way it demonstrates foreknowledge unrelated to terrorists except for those employed by the US Federal government. And, oh yeah, the Pentagon "plane" executed some "Blue Angel"-style acrobatics (after executing a 270 degree turn that took over four minutes, during which time the "plane" was completely vulnerable to a shoot-down, rather than just dive asap into the inner ring of the building where Rumsfeld was an easy target) in order to "luckily" hit the EXACT spot on the building which would inflict the LEAST amount of damage and casualties (as that was the only part of the building being renovated and strengthened to deal with those attacks that "nobody could have possibly dreamed of"). And the two 6-ton TITANIUM jet engines vaporized, of course, right after the miracle happened that caused the wings to fold back so that the engines wouldn't leave a mark on the building. And the 100 tons of airliner debris that you find at every other airliner crash scene (except at the Pentagon and in Shanksville) your buddy, God, caused to vanish into thin air so we wouldn't have to be troubled with it in our time of grief. What makes you think we have a sane government? Actually what we have is "the best government money can buy", and a lot of money was made due to 9/11: "terrist" insurance clauses, free abestos abatement, pretext for ever-profitable war, not to mention the highly profitable option trading that can't be followed up because the trail led to Washington and Langley, Virginia. "National Security", you know!

Jim,

Think about what you are saying: all NORAD has to do is subtract the planes WITH transponder signals, and what is left is the hijacked planes. There are only two possible reasons to turn off those transponders: either to make the planes easier for NORAD to track, or else to make possible a "switch" of the planes with remote-controlled drones possible.

I've looked at the arguments above and not one has addressed the points I have raised, so I would appreciate reponses to each. Thank you, alan

I'm not going to try and sway your mind about 9/11 Jim, because it's obviously made up. But I have to say that the above statement is a roadblock in your mind that shuts down further inquiry. And, to be clear, of course it wasn't the entire government, but elements within the government. Do you deny that false flag ops have been used by governments the world over for a very long time? Are you aware of Operation Northwoods, in which the Joint Chiefs were indeed willing to murder Americans in cold blood?

Your statement just strikes me as extremely naive or just terribly misinformed.

Jim, the energy sink of the towers' collapse doesn´t add up at all. As we all know; energy isn´t created out of nothing and it doesn´t disappear. When a building collapses in a gravity driven event potential energy turns into kinetic energy. There isn´t really any added energy to speak of, certainly not in 500 thousand ton buildings like the late twin towers.

First; the towers (heavily reinforced structures) fell through themselves at virtually free fall speed which is of course physically impossible. If you believe that reinforced buildings can fall through themselves at virtually free fall speed in a gravity driven event you can not also believe that parachutes work. You can't have it both ways.

Second; virtually all concrete, gypsum, was pulverized to a talcum like dust which was then ejected at speed all over Lower Manhattan. The energy required for this is stupendous, both to pulverize dozens of thousands of concrete and also to blow it into the cauliflower like clouds typical of for example pyroclastic vulcanic eruptions.

So; we are to believe that the buildings' potential energy sufficed to stamp them through themselves virtually without any resistance, pulverize virtually all non-metallic matter and then eject that matter all over lower Manhattan. It just does not add up by a long shot.

I'm sure you will realize that the official story does not hold any water at all once you ponder these irrefutable laws of physics.

Thank you for your fine posts but on 9/11 you need to stock up better.

As for the Pentagon, that official fairy tale is way too silly for any intelligent discussion but according to its authors

At the Pentagon there was a sort of an entry hole on the outernmost ring and then an exit hole on the third ring. Those holes were at a horizontal and virtually level plane and as a result it seems to follow that what hit the building did so horizontally and since those holes were feet off the ground what made them was feet off the ground. At 530 miles per hour according to the authors of the official story. However it's totally impossible for a big-winged airliner to land at such speed (an incoming airliner travelling horizontally feet off the ground is obviously in effect landing) because of certain aerodynamic factors such as the ground effect phenomenon. So, it´s all lies that contradict laws of physics and nature, not to mention basic common sense.

Sorry folks, I'm not buying it. I'm a born skeptic. I assess the facts as they are and make up my own mind. I have three main questions: Who?, How?, Why?

Who benefited by destroying the Twin Towers? The market crashed, so the bankers and Wall Street lost billions.

How it was done is the part that requires a huge stretch to believe. To bring down some of the largest buildings in the world through the use of demolition charges would take months of detailed work by hundreds of experts in demolition. You are telling me that there were hundreds, if not thousands of people involved in this "conspiracy", and not one has a guilty conscience and is stepping forward to say they were involved?

Why would Americans murdering 3,000 other Americans be a good idea in anyone's mind?

Please do not give me links to conspiracy sites. If you have facts to state, state them.

The point of the article was not 9/11. The point of the article was to show that our current economic policies could lead to civil unrest and/or war. I'd rather hear viewpoints about that.

You have generated a fascinating social experiment with your awesome artical. I belive I have figured out why you recieved the overwhelming reaction you have. To say that many people are scared right now would be the understatement of the decade. Those who are especially scared are running about the internet looking for ANYTHING either negative or giving suggestions on what to do in the immediate future. That explains how all these "truthers" found your article. The more curious aspect to this is the "truthers" reaction to your piece. It has much to do with peoples fear of the last piece of this post I'm responding to. They are TERRIFIYED of the coming civil unrest and war(s). So they feverently want to belive that all these events since 9/11 are orchrastrated, and that those "powers that be" are still really in control and will "pull the plug" on these chains of events that will lead to massive violence. Many in our society cannot live knowing that chaos is real, and that nobody has any true control on the events about to unfold. Sad thing is we COULD get control over events if more people would realize we have the final say over our own fates, provided we take responsibility AND seriously debate what we must do from a pragmatic and realistic point of view. But no, it is far easier to embrace some conspiracy and jump at our own shadows... Now on to what I really wanted to discuss(the above plays into it, as the populations reactions will determin much of how the future will go.). Let us not forget that we have 2 million incarcerated and for the most part extremly disenfranchised people to add to this witches brew of instability. When the states go broke, they will release most if not eventually all of them back into the population, with absolutely no support or help. That alone will lead to casualties and deaths, not to mention other forms of victims. I believe the coming collapse will have paralles like the soviet collapse and Argentina, but will ultimately be a truly American affair, and far more violent than anything seen before. Ignorance plays a large part in all this, as good education has been missing from this country for at least 2 generations. Another critical item that the masses have lost is any sense of reality, and as a result any ability to sort priorities with any sense of reason. Another componet that will make the coming collapse so dangerous is something I have seen on the streets with my own eyes: Droves of youths that have lost so much hope, that they have only the most minute sense of self preservation, some are totally devoid of this critical instinct. As the situation gets worse, the age and social status of those willing to engage the world from this destructive point of view will rapidly rise. Much of what I know comes from my own experience(a fact that ultimately applies to all of us), so you must understand just how limited the average American is. Boobus Americanas has been so disengaged for so long(all the while using their "distractions" to convince themselves otherwise), that they have little to no idea what to do when there is no beer in the fridge, the lights don't come on when the switch is flipped, or how to secure themselves when nobody will answer 911. Much like a chimp that was trained to push a button to get a treat, if the treat fails to deliver after a push the chimp will escalate quickly into violently slamming the button and screaming until the treat appears. If the treat never appears and is the only food source the experiment will take some truly dark turns, as we will all unfortunately see soon. In order for us to avoid what is coming, over 2 generations of mal-investment and general social degradation will have to be overcome in less than 18 months. Not likely. The masses cannot be saved. Hard choices will have to be made by the producers of our world, and many will be left to the cold and the violence to perish. We cannot diffuse the coming storm in time. All we can do is help the fastest and most able among us get to higher ground, and build something better on the other side of this.

Anomymous, the offical story about 9/11 totally contradicts elementary laws of physics and nature and is therefore by force nothing but a tissue of lies. Why did they prepare these fairy tales and who put them up to it? After the 9/11 Commission has been arrested and questioned the answers to these questions should soon lead to big breaks, arrests in Washington and New York and elsewhere and to the swift implosion of the political system, the financial machine, Wall Street etc.

I, like you, once thought it inconcievable that the government would commit the attrocities of 9-11, however once you go back and look at the video evidence, those buildings were controlled demolitions. Ask yourself how WTC 7 collapsed in the same manner as the other 2 buildings, yet it wasn't even hit by a plane. Once you start peeling that layer back, the whole myth falls apart.

What I could find as 'believable' is that the threat was ignored and perhaps on purpose, considering the first Trade Tower attacks by UBL in 1993. I'll just use common sense logic as an illustration: A group of neighbors all get together and decide to have a Neighborhood Watch program. An arsonist comes in the middle of the night and burns down one of the neighbors houses killing the family inside. Would the other neighbors then not be eternally vigilant and track all threats of arson? What if the neighbors knew who did it but the police force decided they did not wish to arrest and imprison the arsonist? Would the neighbors then take the law into there own hand, find the arsonist where they knew where he was and neutralize the arsonist to prevent more deaths in there neighborhood?

I remember in 1995 & 1996 Defense Sec. William Perry appearing on CNN and other MSM T.V. outlets, repeatedly sounding the alarm about Islamic extremism and the direct threat it posed to the nation. I thought "My God I love this man, he seems to be the only one in Clinton's cabinet with the balls to tell the American people the truth." My hometown city of Portsmouth NH began conducting bioterror and nuclear attack response drills. My apologies for being so rude as not to comment on the actual content of you article Jim. It is a very good article with solid conclusions that I agree with! You've posted pictures of 9/11, with commentary from the NIST report, which is clearly a load of horse hocky. I'd recommend watching the video's than some other patriots have posted on this website. Watch the video's, then see what you think. Don't believe what people say, just watch the actual footage and draw your own conclusions. A real good one is a 50 minute documentary entitled IN PLANE SIGHT. You can watch it on youtube.

There are simply too many extraordinary coincidences and extreme acts of negligence that would've had to come together at the same time in order for the official conspiracy to be true. The government may not have done it, but it sure as hell wasn't 19 hijackers that trained in the deserts of Afghanistan either. At the very least we should be calling for a new, independent investigation. I guarantee you that the government could not prove their conspiracy theory in a court of law, where you actually need evidence to prove a crime.

I'm not going to get sucked into the 9-11 thing. I have been in aviation a long time. I know what a fully-fueled jetliner weighs, and I know how fast they can go (low and high) and I know what one can do at that speed to steel supports. It really is simple, and heat and fire don't even have to be involved, but they were. Nevertheless, people must complicate the disaster in order to make a difficult to understand world make sense.

Anyhow, good stuff in the article. Sadly, civil unrest - even war - is possible. I look forward to none of it.

Compound Fracture, the fully fueled jetliner theory, as impossible as it is, may work for building 1 & 2, so how can you explain building 7? Remember, 3 skyscrapers collapsed, but there were only 2 planes. Sorry man, fire will not cause a 47 story building to collapse on it's own footprint within 6.5 seconds. What is the probablility that 3 skyscrapers would collapse in the exact same fashion from an external collision. It is obvious to the thinking man that these were controlled demolitions, period.

Ok, this is my last post. I just get so frustrated when seemingly intelligent people believe completely illogical conclusions.

Why wouldn't one come forward with a guilty conscience? What would be the purpose of bringing down building 7 ten hours after the others collapsed?

It's not impossible. It happened. What is impossible is believing that my current employer is able to pull off such a conspiracy - all the while keeping the hundreds - if not thousands of people that would have to be involved - silent. I suppose the people on the airliners were in on it too? Where are they? Where's flight 77? Aliens? Hidden in a Bush cave in Nevada?

It's not "illogical" in fact, it's perfectly logical. In fact, classic logic has always favored, "the simplest or most obvious explanation is usually the most probable (or logical)." Fair question and that's one that I don't have an answer for. That would take a conspiracy theory. I don't think it would take hundreds of people, maybe a hundred at the most. Perhaps someone with a guilty conscience will step forward. The story aint over yet...

All I can say to you is when you look at the visual evidence and listen to the actual news reports at the time, there is absolutely no chance that all of these extraordinary coincidences (lapses in NORAD security, 3 buildings collapsing with only 2 planes, no debris recovered from any of the "crash" sites) could've happened outside of some highly skilled organizing principle. Read what the chief architect said to a seattle newspaper regarding the structural design back in 1993: He seems quite certain that planes would in no way affect the structure of the building: http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19930227&slug=1687698. The black smoke from the buildings indicates a lack of oxygen, which means the temperatures inside could not have possibly been hot enough to completely annihilate every piece of structure. Again, how does WTC building 7 completely melt without the jet fuel?

So again I ask, what is the probability that these buildings could've collapsed in the same manner from an external object?

Jim, you're a smart dude. I've read a few of your pieces and their great and it's unfortunate this topic came up, but it's necessary because it really hammers home the point of what kind of danger we are all in.

It will be an impossible overhang for a long time to come and will only be increasingly harmful and dangerous like a serious disease which is allowed to linger on untreated. So, it's best to deal with it and the sooner the better. Any real and fair accounting would lead to the total collapse of the present one-party political system (very good and necessary), extermination/permanent incarceration of scores of dime-a-dozen politicians, apparatchiks and their ilk (no loss at all, only profit) and the total discredit of mass media dumbers down of the public. All this could only be healthy in the long run and anyway the current situation where high treason, fraudulent wars on totally false pretenses, mass murder, torture, hang over a system where confidence and trust are in free fall, is impossible and has to be resolved before it leads to even more serious events. It's them or us. The self-preservation interests of a few thousand dime-a-dozen politicians and apparatchicks seem pretty trivial compared to the real world, the security and well being of dozens of millions of families.

This was the NIST butt-covering theory, if you will. You see it too at the FBI. Osama bin Laden isn´t wanted there for 9/11, because of a lack of hard evidence. These people have realized that the bunk they were ordered to feed to the public was bound to blow up sooner or later, so they hedged their bets.

But of course while the pancake thing was still alive "hundreds of structural experts and specialists" supported that story, at least according to the main stream media and other major dumbers down of the American public. And like other liars and swindlers they quickly switch to any new ordered up tales just like any efficient and diligent and amoral whore will cater to every new and outlandish whim of the customers.

No, it's just that Jim's article is not about 911 conspiracies. And conspiracists are not going to convince the non-conspiracists here at the burning platform that the towers were brought down by controlled demolition (outside of an airliner in controlled flight). So what's the point? Great, a bunch of you think the government brought down the towers. A bunch of us disagree, and we're not stupid people, and we really are "thinking men." Now what? Do we have to agree with you to get you to move on? Suppose you're right. Then what? How will it solve our problems? Are the American people suddenly going to rise and demand accountability? How is that? Currently, the government, working with the FED, is giving away trillions of dollars that do not even exist in the present. If that is not pissing off the American people and causing them to march through the streets demanding an end to socializing loss while keeping profits private, what will piss them off? I'm betting that those posting understand this, however, Jim references 911 and the associated disproportionate response that resulted in the Patriot Act and the reduction of our personal freedoms. One of the reasons the 911 event is so important is that it makes it clear how easy it is to polarize the public through the use of disinformation. It's pretty easy to see (and the government realizes) that the public is going to believe the government story first and foremost, even if it's full of holes. After all, they've been conditioned through decades of schooling that Uncle Sam always has their best interests at heart, and couldn't possibly deliberately do bad things to innocent citizens. As a result, it's far harder for any other theories or evidence to be accepted as valid. People are conditioned through a lifetime of TV watching to hold their attention just long enough for a sound bite of info and then move to the next sound bite. They are trained to grab onto whatever is the least disturbing tidy explanation that is presented to them. The explanation better be wrapped up with a bow in 1 hour (minus commercials) or the typical viewer moves on to the next series of tidy sound bites. If you've done a deep study of the 911 disinformation campaign this effect becomes very evident. Here’s the connection and problem. The same sort of disinformation program that has been utilized since the 911 event, in order to convince the public that the official conspiracy is correct is currently being utilized with the current economics events that are unfolding. So far, the government is doing a satisfactory job of manipulating the public’s beliefs through disinformation. Just as in the 911 event, the challenge is going to be how to get people to understand what the real causes and real issues are. Just as the government’s convenient and tidy explanation was generally accepted in the case of the 911 event, the same general public acceptance of a tidy government explanation will likely be the case with the current economic events. Once again, the actual causes and real issues will be deliberately avoided and we’re on to the next event, without, one more time, having learned anything to prevent a similar event in the future.

On the other hand it could be a chronic case of conditioned denial rather than outright stupidity. If we move this concept down from the conditioning of society as a whole to the family unit we see fathers abusing their children and that is too horrible to be dealt because of the ugly consequences of closure so it becomes a conspiracy of silence which will hopefully go away somehow if it's ignored and not talked about. And mommy drops her head into the soup bowl at the kitchen table because she´s so tired and not because she´s dead drunk. And so on. You probably know this drill from somewhere.

Those towers were an asbestos nightmare and renovations to the tune of billions of dollars was inevitable and besides they were ungainly and very unprofitable dinosaurs on Manhattan. After the internet came in with online stock trading and such the demand for office space physically close to Wall Street dropped seriously. Why some box cutter guys led by a CIA employee with a laptop in a cave in the middle of nowhere would decide to resolve this mess for the owners of the towers is beyond me but I'm not privy to the exact employer-employee connections of that crowd. :)

My goodness, the comments have really gone off-topic. There are other places to discuss 9/11, the discussion here is non-constructive (and let me just add that I have strong sympathies for the sceptics...).

Here is a quote from the 1940's b/w version of TO BE OR NOT TO BE: "The man (professor Siletzky) came with the best recommendations. He can't be a German spy! He's is probably just a fool (telling the Polish RAF pilots he'd go on a mission to Poland)" "That makes him even more dangerous and he must be stopped!"

I think that analogy should be considered in this particular case: Whether 9/11 was orchestrated by government officials, whether government officials knew what was going on but didn't do nothing to interfere or whether government officials were simply inefficient to react accordingly as events unfolded - the outcome was gross incompetence, either by design or accident.

And as a straight reply to Jim Quinn, asking the basic question "who was profiting from it?" (to have motive), I reply back "Homeland Security" (which has been a recent issue in other articles).

Hi Jim,

You say that you wanted comments on the article, rather than 9/11. Fair enough! I read S&H’s 4T in early 2000. It gave me some personal structure to the old saying that history repeats. It also provided a loose timeline for when history would potentially repeat and what conditions would need to be satisfied so that we could proceed to the next turning.

I agree with you that we are in a fourth turning; however, I do not see 9/11 as the catalyst. If it were, the attitudes would have changed drastically shortly thereafter. Granted, it held the nation’s attention for weeks. Our political leaders were forced to deal with it and find someone to blame. They levied a war against bin Laden and the Taliban in Afghanistan, but got redirected to Iraq before accomplishing the stated mission. Meanwhile, back in the USA, interest rates were plummeting and the home buying frenzy was in full swing. Getting personal wealth superseded national interests. The media circus resumed parading a mind numbing entourage of idiots across the screen. Other than the brief time immediately after 9/11, we’ve been in an extension of the third turning.

When the financial crisis hit about 20 months ago, the nation still perceived it as a roadblock, rather than a life changing event. A few companies went under, the stock market dropped, gas prices rose, but we were able to overcome all of those issues. It seemed as though no issues would bring down this great nation of consumers. Since then, the stock market peaked, more companies went bankrupt, and unemployment is ratcheting upwards. There is palpable fear in many corners of society. There is still hope that we’ll overcome this obstacle and we can then go back to charging at the malls, but hope is fading. Most people realize that we’re in for a long winter season to make up for the over indebtedness we’ve spent ourselves into. I hear it wherever I go. Rather than focus on who to blame, the conversations generally focus on how to cope. Rather than discussing the latest escapades of Paris Hilton or who is the favorite American Idol star, people are talking about the bailouts and the unrelenting borrowing that this country is doing. People are worried that we’re going too far, too fast or not far enough, not fast enough. Many are doubting the ability of our country to survive.

There are other anecdotal pieces, but the point is that our society is now in the grips of the fear that is the hallmark of the 4T. The starting point only matters when planning for it to be completed. If it started in 2001, it will likely be finished (due to exhaustion) sooner than if it started in 2007. Nonetheless, we’re looking at a solid 15+ years before we exit this phase. The worst is still ahead of us!

I agree that the Federal Reserve’s loose monetary policies allowed too much credit to be created and thus too many bubbles were inflated. They are desperately trying to reinflate the housing bubble by dropping interest rates. If the attitude has shifted sufficiently to self preservation, this will fail.

I agree that our rights are being assaulted. It scares me that this is happening. From my reading of the various Acts, the political leaders in government can declare an emergency and install martial law at any time, thus removing all our rights until the emergency subsides. At that point, who will be able to rise up to stop them? I’ve written my congressional people asking them to oppose these acts. That didn’t do much other than perhaps get me listed on some subversive database.

Your paragraph about the 19 Muslim terrorists using knives … is probably what has drawn the ire of the those who don’t believe the official story. You sound pretty convinced that it actually happened this way. At one site, I read a succinct grouping of 4 levels of conspiracy theories.

- Level 0. No conspiracy. The 19 hijackers just coincidentally showed up at the airport at the same time without any prior coordination whatsoever.

- Level 1. The 19 hijackers conspired to fly planes into various targets for over a year without anyone in the government’s intelligence community being aware of their actions.

- Level 2. Same as level 1, but different parts of the intelligence community had bits and pieces of information. For instance, one group knew some of these guys were up to no good, but didn’t know what. Other groups knew something was going to happen on 9/11, but didn’t know how. Others knew that something was going to happen with planes, but not where or when.

- Level 3. Same as level 2, but this time, the information was sent up the command chain. At the highest levels in the Administration, they were able to put the pieces together and realized what, when, and where the attack would happen. Although they could have stopped the event, they decided that a war was a good way to revive the struggling economy and gain power for themselves. They would allow the event to occur, let the terrorists take the credit, and then take full advantage of the situation.

- Level 4. Same as level 3, but this time, they would make sure the terrorists would be successful. In order to confuse any of the immediate responders, they would set up a NORAD training exercise where hijackers are flying planes into buildings. Rather than trust these guys to fly the planes, they would equip the planes with remote control devices. Rather than allow the buildings to fall haphazardly, thus causing more damage, they would pre wire the buildings with thermate in order to produce the desired horrific, catalyzing event with minimal collateral damage.

The official government story resides firmly in Level 2. They are saying that the government wasn’t incompetent but rather uncoordinated. As such, we need to give them new tools to stop terror in its tracks regardless of how many citizen rights have to be trampled in the process. I personally would like to see an independent investigation - at the same level as the investigation into the Kennedy assassination - before the trail gets any colder. Popular Mechanics presented their debunking theories (by creating straw man arguments and then shooting down the straw men,) but hasn’t responded to serious objections to their methodology and/or findings. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Your condemnation of the consumer state of America is quite accurate. We are generally mindless consumers unwilling to delve into anything harder than a marshmallow. Many don’t bother voting because they think it is worthless. Others wanted to vote for change and voted accordingly. At this point, we’re hoping that the leaders will fix the problem without disrupting our shopping experience. As I noted above, I believe that hope is quickly fading. What will it morph into and when?

The sand analogy with the potential outcomes is quite interesting. I agree that a small group can probably focus enough unrest to actually cause major changes. It has to happen in the right place at the right time or it will just fizzle. In essence, Strauss and Howe’s “gray champion” is such a grain.

Your flash points are all likely given the state of relations in the world. I can envision others as well. The point is that this 4T has quite a few possible outcomes that will leave our country in a far worse shape. Some will be survivable for the majority, while others could send us into a chaotic self destroying spiral. It isn’t possible to prepare for all outcomes, but it is possible to prepare to be more self sufficient. First, get out of debt. Second, learn about edible native plants and where to find potable water. Third, stock your pantry so you can survive minor disruptions. There are many more things to do, but this is a start.

The fact highlighted by everyone who mentioned the report was that the number of blacks in prisons for drug offenses decreased by 21.6% from 1999 to 2005, but what happened is that in 2004 the DoJ simply removed 6.5% of the data, which was everyone identified as mixed race black-and-white. In reality the number of blacks in prison only went down 12% from 1999 to 2005, to exactly 50% of the total, which is still nuts considering that according to the DoJ's own data blacks only make up 14% of drug users.

And no mainstream media outlet noticed how the numbers were massaged, even though CNN, the Washington Post, The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and NPR all carried the report without once questioning the DoJ's data or pointing out their lie of omission.

I'm very dismayed by the amount of 9/11 commentary present in the thread postings so far.

The reference to 9/11 was to mark the acceleration of an authoritarian trend in our government, stifling dissent and entrenching control in an ever more powerful elite.

The 9/11 crisis was effectively used to ramrod a bill through Congress that had already been written. The groups that put together the PATRIOT act pre 9/11 are the ones that deserve scrutiny.

Once we dig that far, we will have a handle on the perpetrators of this autocracy.

Sorry this is so late, but it didn't post when I sent it over to you BEFORE the other posts of mine above. I kept a copy because I have lost lots of hours of comment-creating work by not doing so, this being a good exaample. So here's what I wrote at that time (I would still appreciate a response because I believe these are points no one else broached):

The "official" 9/11 story starts out by calling the U.S. airliner pilots cowards: Chick Burlingame's sister (see the video on you tube) says he would NEVER have turned his plane over to people that he wasn't sure could and would fly it safely; he would have DIED first. But the "eyewitness" calls (using cellphone technology that didn't exist in 2001) claim that he and other of the U.S. pilots were walked to the back of their planes

Russ Wittenberg (see the video on you tube) is a retired UA pilot who PERSONALLY flew two of the planes allegedly lost on 9/11, and he says that whatever hit the Pentagon wasn't one of those planes, because they couldn't take the g-forces that the flight pattern generated and FOR SURE no amateur pilots could have done that flying because he knows of NO human pilot (regardless of their expertise) who could have.

MIlitary/CIA people with top-secret security clearance are expected and trained to lie under oath, so just because some people say they witnessed this or that cuts exactly no ice: who knew Valerie Plame was a Mata Hari before the Bush traitors outted her? I'm not saying that Atta didn't get on a plane, I'm just saying it is more likely that he was getting on as a participant (playing one of the "bad guys") in the MANY war games that were very coincidentally scheduled to include the 9/11 date (taking the USAF pretty much totally out of the target area at just the right time). There are witnesses to the fact that certain floors of the WTC twin towers were vacant and closed off in the weeks before the assault and much loud noise was heard coming from those floors, but no one in a position to get heard is yet willing to ask the hard questions. That will soon change.

The 9/11 Commission didn't even MENTION Building 7: I mean, "please", don't you have any intellectual curiosity at all? Jet fuel doesn't burn anywhere NEAR hot enough to melt steel, and if the floors actually HAD pancaked, you'd have had two quarter mile-high spines of columns left standing over two huge piles of piled-up floors sitting ON top of the building footprints, rather than clouds of debris exploded to nanoparticle-sized dust and the pre-cut support columns sitting in the blown-out basements. And you sure wouldn't have had pools of molten metal in those basements for WEEKS after. The tie-ins to the songs are cute, but how can you expect anyone to take you seriously when you parrot the people you supposedly disparage with obviously not having done a lick of homework?

Knowingly or not, you are spreading a lot misinformation, such as, above, concerning 9/11, and as follows, concerning the banking debacle and an actual cure.

You should already know that the banking industry PACKED the U.S. Constitutional convention and, for all practical purposes, took over the US Federal government in 1787; we've all been putting money into their pockets ever since, the ripoff just getting more and more blatant lately, but not really any different), and you should know that, consequently, our "national debt" can be considered odious (see "odious debt" on wikipedia) and due and payable by the regime and people for whose benefit the debt was created (this will also happen soon). And also that, as a "right to life" implies a right to constant and unhindered access to land; governments which privatize land (as they all do: some just allocate their lands by market auction and some don't) may be considered to owe compensation to everyone whose right to free access to land they have impaired.

The real problem is that cybernation (computers and automation technology, replacing both manufacturing and service positions by the millions, a trend that will be accelerating as companies look to cut costs during this depression) is putting more people out of work than it creates opportunities for employment. The "easy Fed money" was covering up a systemic disease that appears to be terminal for our present way of distributing economic resources. Unemployment is going to continue to surge higher until the actual disease gets "cured".

Actually the cure is easy: replace Fed money with our own debt-free money of which we give everyone an equal ration (say, $1000 per month); replace all Federal income-based taxes with a half percent (or so, whatever is required to negate inflation) "infrastructure maintenance fee" on EVERY electronic transfer of money (cash and barter are to be completely untaxed); and get rid of all the "safety nets" (including all personal and corporate subsidies that really just camouflage the ripoffs and the insurance programs (like FDIC) that hide banking's systemic risk behind a promise to socialize losses. Everyone gets the same ration, everyone pays the same %, everyone can work as much as they want with no penalty, everyone can make as much money as they are able with no extra penalty; the people who enact this program will also be eager to dismantle the 4200 other Federal programs and laws that distort the free market to the benefit of the banking industry and all their myriad "virtual subsidiary" corporations.

ps. It's one thing to be fooled (as I certainly was). It's quite another thing to STAY fooled. It puts everything else you have to say in doubt as to your intellectual acuity. 911 is an awareness/IQ test. Start. (the points I just brought up - see above - are as good a place as any)
