Hi Jim.

I was wondering why we have not heard from you...and now I know. Your sharing the above is totally mind blowing. I appreciate all the effort you put into this endeavor.

A couple of comments. 1) You state that our parents taught us right from wrong. I would have to disagree with that statement as it applies to today. Parents are NOT teaching right from wrong and in fact, go overboard in the protection of their children, right or wrong...teaching them it is OK whatever they do.  In the generation prior to the current generation, the parents were not blameless either. The hidden abuses within the home with no help from the outside is just one example of the corruption within the family that has been around a long, long time. 2) The biggest defeat of overcoming "evil" concerns public education. Parents have allowed government backed schools total control in promoting liberal philosophies. This is occurring on all levels - grade school through graduate school. The children come out of school as snot-nosed "know-it-alls". The only expertise held is the ability and knowledge of how to spend others' money via credit card. They have lived off mommy, daddy & society and now think they have all the answers to the world's problems. The blind leading the blind.

People have been evil/wicked for a long time. The executives of the steel industry, the rail industry & airline industry come to mind. And....it was not just the top dogs stealing...the employees were stealing as well. I am sure that if we all take an honest look wirhin our own families we can see many, many instances of "evil"...things done in the past that would land these relatives in jail today. So, we have had great teachers in the art of evil, for sure.

I find it amazing that given all these "teachings" that "good" still exists! Maybe I am an eternal optimist, but, I still think the good out numbers the evil.

The graphs of the savings rates in the US vs China were astounding.  What would it take to get Americans to save at even half the Chinese rate?  Oh--I forgot, we're so stretched by our low salaries and high cost of living that we could never save like the Chinese do.  Sorry for even asking such a dumb question.

Great comments - apt for the Boomer generation.  Especially like the perspective on security vs creation as we age.  I catch myself worrying along those lines and wondering how to improve the former via the latter.

I agree about China being the economy of the 21st century.  As good capitalists, how do we invest in the creation and innovation going on there while still adhering to our beliefs about good and evil?

Jim,

Excellent article again.  I have followed along with your work for some time and you don't need to sway your readers any more.  But I maintain that a severe external event will have to happen in order to change the opinions of the majority of the 300 million "good" people of America away from the social inebriation we face today.

The dollar collapses, or

Korea launches, or

Iran launches, or

Israel launches, or

Obama detains "right wing extremists", or

You don't trust your neighbor because you know he's running out of food.

What's it gonna be?

I don't buy this talk about fundamentally evil men.  We are all human and have our flaws, some more acceptable socially than others.  Granted you may call men (and women) with certain flaws "evil", but this is a subjective term.  When we start to talk in absolutes, it gives rise to hatred and violence by alienating us from each other.  Consider those tragic cases where somebody truly talented and bright has made an error which leads to the slippery slope.  This is even more tragic if that person does not realize that the path they have taken is the wrong one, until it is too late.

I do realize that there are two levels at play here.  The instinctive, animal level, where we want to punish those who have done us wrong, while those who have done us wrong have done it following their animal desires.  There is also the rational level, of which to I am referring to above.  Realistically, I know the beast in us will take over and this will end like it did in France in the 1790's.  I will, however, not be the one holding the sword.

This morning, I read an inspiring story about GLL Centres, a London-based non-profit operating gyms for the benefit of the community. (check their site at gll.org).  This is truly brilliant thinking, as it uses the current environment to subtly undermine the status quo.  The non-profit model would be a brilliant model to start in the area of finance as well.  By not having to pay dividends, a well-run non-profit would easily conquer it's for-profit rivals, being able to outgrow them.  The instrumental thing here would be to get good people with good values running the place.

I will end with a line from one of my favorite works of philosophy (and one of the oldest) that really resonated in my mind when I read the story of this non-profit beating it's for-profit rivals in their own game:

To reduce someone's influence, first expand it;
To reduce someone's force, first increase it;
To overthrow someone, first exalt them;
To take from someone, first give to them.

This is the subtlety by which the weak overcome the strong:
Fish should not leave their depths,
And swords should not leave their scabbards.
(Dao De Jing, Ch.36)

Jim,

Thanks for the great overview of the questionable decisions and actions made by so many people.

The primary root of these decisions is the widespread lack of critical thinking and teaching.

Critical pedagogy is a teaching approach that attempts to help students question and challenge domination, and the beliefs and practices that dominate. In other words, it is a theory and practice of helping students achieve critical consciousness. Critical pedagogue Ira Shor defines critical pedagogy as

"Habits of thought, reading, writing, and speaking which go beneath surface meaning, first impressions, dominant myths, official pronouncements, traditional clichés, received wisdom, and mere opinions, to understand the deep meaning, root causes, social context, ideology, and personal consequences of any action, event, object, process, organization, experience, text, subject matter, policy, mass media, or discourse." (Empowering Education, 129)

The teaching of these same habits of thought, etc are even more important when received from a parent or guardian.

These skills are not taught through public education as a result of the high probability that the designers of the education system never were educated by parents or teachers through critical pedagogy.

Teaching this would require the parent and teacher to allow a critical challenge of their dominant myths, opinions, official pronouncements and received ‘wisdom’.

Once an individual accepts dominant myths (e.g. religious myths based on circular arguments) as truth, without critical thinking, it becomes easier and easier to accept other lesser myths and received ‘wisdom’ as truth.

The expansion of critical pedagogy, individual by individual is a slow but crucial path to any long lasting positive change.

Jim, seems to me that this is your best post yet because it is getting to the heart of the problem.  I like this quote from your post.

“The problem is that the good people have let their guard down and allowed evil men to prevail. By delegating their civic responsibility for their own well being to corrupt, power hungry, evil men, we have traded liberty and freedom for a false sense of security “

It is clear to me that the corrupt people who are in control of our national policies (many named within your post), have malicious intent.  What we face is not mistake, ignorance or stupidity, it is, in fact, the evil inside the corrupted hearts and minds of those directing national policy. Historically, corrupt people who hold positions of power tend only to worsen their corruption and surround themselves with others who can be corrupted.  The corrupt do not willing yeild.  Good men must forcibly retake the structures of power.  We have spent many decades losing our freedoms, and thereby losing our ability to create wealth.  It will now most probably take freedom loving humanity decades to restore what we have lost.  In the decades ahead, those of us who would promote an honest, free, and prosperous government will surely face the fight of our lives.

Let us each work diligently to create food, water, energy and defense independence.  And let us join with good men and women of our communities to begin anew the creation and construction of  a legacy of freedom we can leave our descendents.   In my own experience Obama’s quote;  “Most men love money and security more, and creation and construction less, as they get older.”,  is untrue.  As I get older, the creation and construction of enduring goodness is all that matters.  Thank you.

One of your earliest statements is..

"The President and Vice President of the United States lying to the American people that there were WMD in Iraq and proclaiming that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 attack."

I appreciate what you've written, but the above statement sadly taints your article. This statement was not in any way necessary to make the important points you wanted to make. However it raises nagging doubts and unnecessarily distracts from the credibility of what you have written.

You can explore the Iraq/9-11 connection here:  http://www.thexreport.com/the_prague_connection1.htm
(Pics showing Atta meeting with Iraqi Intelligence officer in Prague prior to 9/11)

Yet you made no mention of the false reporting regarding the source of the Fall 2001 anthrax attack
    http://www.thexreport.com/false_and_flawed_logic_(anthrax_&_ivins).htm

Nonetheless you've done an excellent job in analyzing and reporting a lot of data that too many people wish to ignore.

One lie I would suggest adding is Obama's unwillingness to release his full birth certificate information. His Constitutional qualification for the Presidency may equal his lack of qualifications in any area apart from manipulating others.

I thank you for your work!

Jim, fair enough using the graph and % for savings rate, but in absolute $ the numbers look very different. The Chinese might save 25% of their money, but they make $2370 a year. Can't by a dreaded McMansion on that! All is not lost!

GNI per capita, Atlas method (current US$)

USA: $46,040

China: $2,370

Jim, Per my comments on your China statistics earlier in the thread – they have a much, much, much lower base. They are already a dominant world power by shear size and productivity, and that has military and foreign policy risk. However, often my hang-up with some of your articles: They scream the sky is falling, but in reality, it is more accurately described as a long, slow, decline (well, much quicker with O's budget). We have time to correct the situation, and we need to gather the will. The dire message often leads to comments from readers that are 'end-of-the-World' (what would you horde?) and 'blame-America-first'.

It is easy to look at your China savings statistic for example, and conclude that we will be a province of China by early next year, when in fact a menial laborer in po-dunk USA still earns more then the middle class Chinese. They also have their own slew of problems that are much more dire then our own ‘McMansion’ issue. China is severely limited: demographics, pollution, gov’t model, corruption, etc. They have 100s of millions of people with no savings or health care coming into retirement ago. In reality, every country in the planet is in rough shape. The ones able to weather the storm without coming apart at the seams will prevail. That is what America is great at – we just need to focus on getting the gov’t spending and involvement under control. And we need to keep our wits, a can-do attitude, and hold our heads up.

Some good article on China:

Jim,

Like many long commentaries quickly written yours contains two things; passion and errors, e.g. "lying to the American people that there were WMD in Iraq ".

I think you could write a very fine commentary concerning the things you point to that have lead the U.S., and the world, to its current economic situation.

However, we are NOT in our current predicament because "we have allowed evil men to gain control of our government and financial institutions".  We are here because mankind has allowed false charity and its false words to infect the world with evil.

Do not let your errors regarding motives bring the Hangman to say to you, "I did no more than you let me do."

Real good article.

One quible -- whenever someone wants an example of a really evil man, Hitler's name always comes up.  To your credit, at least you also added Stalin, an equally evil man.

But, really ... listing someone like Madoff next to Stalin is stretching it a bit.  One made off with billions, another done away with  (tens of) millions.

But like Stalin said, "millions is a statistic, one is a tragedy".
