I return to Robert E. Lee’s advice to his son, after the Civil War. His son was trying to find a work force for his farm in Virginia. Lee advised against using blacks. Why? It was not that he hated them, not at all. He wished them well on a personal level. What Lee understood and idiot whites do not is that their interests and ours are forever different and a substantial number of blacks seethe with hatred for all whites.
I feel genuine sympathy for the minority of blacks who understand this and do not stand with their “brothers”, knowing that the majority of blacks will never fit into a civilized society. Their position is not enviable.
I grew up in the old plantation regions of the bootheel region of Southeast Missouri. Missouri wasn’t a border state because she was neutral. Missouri was a border state because there were several very large plantations with slaves on those alluvial plains left behind hundreds of thousands of years ago by a Gulf of Mexico creeping northward turning Crowley’s Ridge (my father’s grave is on Crowley’s Ridge, appropriately) on the Mississippi Embayment into beachfront property thousands of years before that meant a thing. I could see Crowley’s Ridge from my bedroom window!
So, I grew up in an integrated area, with many of the former slaves from the region settling onto farmland auctioned off for as little as $1 an acre after the Little River Drainage District drained the standing water from the swamp. My grandfather and his brother purchased four sections of forty acres which adjoined a black family’s land. The family were descended from former slaves further south, with the patriarch taking his share of a plantation there and buying some flooded swampland in Missouri to bring his family up free.
Six years ago, several members of that black family stood up and spoke at my father’s funeral, praising him for his principled stand on many issues. Six years ago, I would have sworn that my friendship with the members of that family was real and still as valid as it ever was when I was a child being rocked by their grandmother in their home.
After the past couple of years, I am no longer so sure those relationships could withstand a public review. I’m sure they would treat me well privately, but would they step forward to defend me against claims of white privilege? Would they attest to the fact that we lived side by side and picked cotton and chopped beans side by side?

My best friend in HS, an all boy county Vocational & Technical HS in New Brunswick NJ (I would call it a blackboard jungle of its day) class of 67, was black.
My black best friend lived in the projects…no dad, and I was the only white kid allowed in the projects a number of times…but always escorted by Jimmy. No one would dare challenge or attack me under his protection.
Jimmy ranked hands down the most charismatic guy in the school/projects, as well as one of if not the toughest…he had lighting fists and used them if insulted or challenged. I was two and a half years younger than him (he had dropped out of school for a year to work to support his mom, and I had started school at 4 so at graduation in 67 I was 17 and he was almost 20). I had been in numinous heavily attended fist fights at my HS, and along with a number of other incidents that established me as someone who could and would unendingly punch viciously above his weight. Jimmy liked that about me, and told me that. That was part of the glue that bonded me and him, neither of us hung with any click…and no click would mess with me or him.
We went to the 3 county Trade schools prom together, so two thirds of the students/teachers didn’t know one another. In the parking lot after Jimmy produced a pint bottle of brandy, him and I and our girlfriends sipped out of (two drop-dead salt and pepper beauties) I came up with the buzzed up idea of switching girlfriends when going in through the receiving line! We had double dated a lot our senior year.
It took a lot of convincing…and the brandy won them over! Remember this was 1967.
It was a scandal and we had a blast! Jimmy and I had always gotten past race…we were tight.
Both of us got coveted apprenticeships after graduation and I threw myself into learning my trade, losing complete track of Jimmy who disappeared into the bowels of New York City.
Flash forward 12 years.
I’m 29 walking the floor in a part time job as a Store Detective in a grocery store in a black area for extra Christmas money for my wife and daughter, who I tended to shower with ‘stuff’. I was also working full time for a Pharmaceutical company, bought my first house, and was living the American Dream. On a good day I could nail 3 to 4 shoplifters, and in the first three months I was in half a dozen raging on the ground fights. I had gotten into Judo and found it perfect for convincing the local hoods to submit. I loved it, and the excitement and the adrenalin. After I established dominance in the store/neighborhood the owner was thrilled as many of the punks and thieves took their crap to the competition, and I was given a raise.
Then one day I was tapped on the shoulder in the store and spinning around (ready to dance if I had to) there was Jimmy.
He looked like shit, gaunt and skinny. Being into Judo and a gym rat I was actually much bigger then him now…that had been the reverse in HS.
I was all over him laughing and trying to hug him…he was subdued. He asked what I had been doing. Told him I went into the Marines, fought in Nam, got home and tried another apprenticeship, didn’t like it, went to collage didn’t like it, wandered around the county in a van doing the Route 66 life style a couple of years, ended up on an oil rig in the gulf, met my West Texas wife, had a baby girl, bought a house. Here I am.
I asked what Jimmy what he had been doing?
Long pause…then he deadpanned me with cold eyes and said: I just got out of the joint.
Long silence.
Then out of left field Jimmy went into a racial complaint and referred to ‘The Man’ as my people…continuing his racial rant.
I said nothing back on the rant.
Then he said…what are you doing here in this neighborhood? (I had told him my house was on the coast in another town almost 30 minutes away).
I told him I was a Store Detective (this was 1979 that was the term then) but I was also performing bouncing duties, he knew what I meant.
Then his eyes flared and he and I both realized…he was there to shoplift, and I was the guy he had heard about who was turning some of the locals into pretzels on the ground.
Jimmy gave me a dirty look, did an abrupt about face, and I never ever saw him again. He never came back in that store once, and I worked there five more years part time until 1984 when we moved to Texas.
I found out Jimmy had become a heroin addict…that was why he was in and out of the joint…I’m sure he is long dead.
Just another black (who happened to be charismatic, gifted, and tough) who stuck needles into his veins and blamed The (white) Man for his own self destruction.
Someone I greatly respected in the USAF for his wit, intellect and wonderful storytelling abilities regarding his growing up on the streets of Philadephia (30 blocks type of stories), which deserves respect because he was well-spoken, educated and smart. He was a Master Sergeant when he retired. He’d done well as a Radio Operator (Flight), but mostly he’d prepared himself for a post-service professional career.
I’d been in contact with him off and on over the past few years, but during the initial days after the killing of George Floyd, I asked him and another black friend bluntly on social media what they thought the eventual solution would be.
He said “Two Americas. The one you live in and the one I live in.”
He’s back in Philadephia, though in a much nicer neighborhood than the ghetto he told us about when we flew together and lived in the same world.

Some people reach their zenith in High School…then in life crash and burn…the guy had it all: looks, intellect, charisma, he was a fearless tough street fighter, and came out of HS with an apprenticeship for a skilled trade. Guys respected or feared him, and girls wanted him. His girlfriend was one of the prettiest black girls I have ever seen…and they had a daughter together, he was the top student in our class. But he loved hanging out in NYC.
I asked around over the years…he disappeared back into the Rotten Apple in the early 80’s never to be seen or heard of again.
I look at his picture in the HS yearbook and just sigh.
It was a rough school…we never have had a class reunion…they would have to hold it in either Rahway State Prison or the grave yard.

I can relate. However, I have worked in both of the large package delivery companies. You know, one is brown and the other one likes red and purple. I racked up nearly 20 years altogether. Both companies hires way over their quota of blacks. A few were really hard workers, but most of them, not so much. The hard workers were almost always very solid Christians. Most of the blacks always congregated together for lunch and breaks. Always. It was almost a glaring voluntary separatism. It’s what they want. Give it to them.
