A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
SMC, nkit, Austrian Peter, and Steve C.
Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.
We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.
Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.
We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.
A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.
We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.
Franz Peter Schubert Symphony.9 in C Major, D 944
Performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch.
Often considered this Austrian composers finest piece for orchestra and referred to as ‘The Great’. This symphony is also one of Schubert’s most innovative pieces. It is the last symphony completed by him before his early death at age 31.

Concerto for Flute and Harp KV 299 (2nd movement)
Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Performed by the Symphony orchestra of the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory Music School.
Conducted by Arkady Steinlucht.
Check out the youth talent in this piece.
Flute – Anna Komarova – the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory Music School.
Harp — Alisa Sadikova – the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory Music School.
Second movement in the concerto.
Tip: Don’t applaud at the end of individual movements… you’ll be the only one clapping. Wait until the end of the entire concerto or symphony.
Easy method: Wait until others clap with gusto, then yell “Bravo!” if you really loved the piece.
One of my faves:
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring from Cantata 147 Titled “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben” (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life)
Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1723.
This version is presented by the Redeemer Lutheran College.
Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue
Edward Gardner conducts the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra for George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with soloist Adrian Brendle.
This One’s For The Kids
‘Peter and The Wolf’ – Sergei Prokofiev’ Op. 67
David Bowie narrates this animated Disney classic while the orchestra paints a picture of it musically.
Each character in the story is represented by a different orchestral instrument/s.
Peter by a string quartet.
The bird by a flute.
The duck by an oboe.
The cat by a clarinet.
The grandfather by a bassoon.
The wolf by three French horns.
The shooting of the hunters by the kettle drums and bass drum.
I loved the record that I had as a kid and just about wore the grooves off of it. It definitely had an influence on my musical tastes growing up and in later life. It’s a great way to introduce kids to orchestral music.
Play it for the kiddos.
Next up for the kids, Paul Dukas’s, ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ from the Disney movie ‘Fantasia’, staring Mickey Mouse on March 22nd.
The Classic Music Mafia – Adding some class to this joint one Sunday at a time.

I bet that outfit as the piano soloist had a few old bitties in the audience a bit miffed.
(Classical enthusiasts can be a bit uppity at times; especially the oldsters.)
