Tensions between the US and Iran flared again on Thursday when the Iranian Revolutionary Guard shot down an American drone that was said to have flown into Iranian airspace. The drone was reportedly flying over the Strait of Hormuz – that critical chokepoint for the global oil trade – not far from where two oil tankers were recently attacked.
“We will defend Iran’s airspace and maritime boundaries with all our might,” Ali Shamkhani, secretary-general for the Supreme National Security Council was quoted as saying by state-run Islamic Students’ News Agency. “It doesn’t matter which country’s aircraft cross our airspace.
IRGC Commander Hossein Salami said shooting down the drone had a clear and strong message: Iran’s borders are ‘red lines’ and though Iran doesn’t seek war, Iran is ready for war.
The news sent oil prices surging, with Brent up more than 2.5%. President Trump has been briefed on the incident and the White House is “monitoring the situation.” The US military has branded the shooting “an unprovoked attack.”
The shooting follows attacks on six tankers in the region, which Iran has denied responsibility for (including the two from last week). On Wednesday, a news agency operated by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said that the rebels had hit a power station in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, with a cruise missile, though these reports weren’t independently verified.
Particularly after the US dispatched more troops to the region last week, tensions between the US and Iran just won’t subside, with Tehran still furious over US sanctions on oil sales. With Tehran poised to violate its agreements under the JCPOA on enriched uranium stockpiles, many are fearful that a ‘hot war’ between the US and Iran might erupt. If it did, some of Washington’s biggest geopolitical adversaries (Russia and China) could get involved, triggering WWIII.

Just speculating but maybe Iran is getting crushed by the sanctions put on after withdrawing from the “Nukler” Deal…… as Shrub the Younger would call it. So Iran is playing a very dangerous game hoping to get Trump to the table and negotiate a deal……they have to stir the pot to create some negotiation leverage. Very dangerous.
Alternatively, Iran could be hoping to keep things simmering until a Dem is installed and then they know they will get a great deal from a POTUS Harris, Warren, etc. John Kerry has been telling them that for months.
So if Isra-Hell is really calling the shots as so many on TBP claim….well I guess war is a foregone conclusion.
I tend to agree MH. I can see the logic of Iran leaders poking trump in the ribs to alter the game plan. Rather than suffer a continuing economic stranglehold that killed half a million children in Iraq by these monsters, bring it to a head now that the whole world hates and distrusts us. They may have the backing of Russia and China. Enough of this fucking ‘Axis of Evil’: the u s, Isra-hell and sorry arabia. Frightening for sure.
These attacks by Iran are a cry for attention to get Trump to the negotiating table. I would like to see John Kerry immediately arrested for treason and violation of the Logan act. That would be a better response than kinetic action by the US Military. Don’t take the bait Mr. Trump and if the Saudis and Israel want war with Iran….tell them to go for it…we will just sit back and watch our oil producers get well paid……and even the MIC can make some money selling arms to the combatants ……we just don’t need to play. We should be preparing for the real fight with China and her vassals in Russia etc. Those Chicoms are going against 3,000 years of Chinese tradition by seeking an expansionary empire….fuck that shit.
